Question 29er Wheelset - Ideas

While riding Palm Cayon yesterday on my Niner Sir9, I had my first run in with almost tacoing my front wheel. It happened at the bottom of a G-Out. My wheel washed out and I got pitched. Sucked... After I got up from the crash, I started riding again and noticed that the front wheel was hitting both sides of the stanchions on my fork. Pretty bad. I was able to true it again, but now I just don't trust it anymore.

I am thinking about building up a new wheelset for All Mountain use. Any input on Hub/Spoke/Rim combo's that will build up strong? I am thinking of getting the Hope Pro II's and the Stans Arch or Flow rims.

Any reccomendations?

I think Flow's are probably a little burlier. Justin also has been riding with a Sun Ringle 29er wheel for his rear wheel. He's got a front, but never built it up. It's held up for him.

Craig, I'm thinking of the same wheelset(s).... and having the same debate.

I'm leaning toward Arches for the SS, and Flows for the FS.

i think the WTB Dual Duty is supposed to be stronger than the 32H Flow, on par with the 36H.

the Sun Rhino Lite is a great rim but is a tad heavy. nice and wide though.
I bent the rim. So bad that when I spun the wheel, the tire would hit both sides of the stanchions...

Would it be stupid to put Flows on the SS?

Sun DS2's on crappy hubs.

Justin - Can you explain spokes and the different choices. I have seen things like 14/17. What spoke combo would you recommend building the wheels up with?

Flows are only 55g heavier than the Arches.

According to Stan's. Flows = 525g; Arches = 470g.

Plus it's your front wheel. What's 55g to you. Flow on a SS not stupid at all I think.

Hope Pro 2 good idea. It can do 20mm or QR axle in case you that 20mm Reba or 29'er Pike ever comes out.

Yo Hugh...I was checking out the CX Ray's. Looks pretty bad ass. I will definately use those...

What is the benefit of using brass nipples?

Stronger than Aluminum, they tension up nice and smooth, the threads don't seem to corrode over time, but are heavy and don't come in bling colors.

Thanx Hugh. You da man!

Can anyone chime in on the pro and cons of running a eyeleted rim vs non-eyeleted?

I've got two sets of stand arches that's held up pretty well for a Newfie who doesnt know how to pick lines and bashes through everything. One on I9 (reba) and the other on Hope proII with TA (WB fluid 135). Just had two huge endos yesterday rolling of a bolder too fast and the front fork packed up and bucked at idyllwild. I've gotta learn some riding skills the wheel looks great still.

i personally love my Flows with I9s w/ enduro hubs....very, very stiff wheelset for a 29er. other options of course but i like this setup quite a bit so far

on the single speed i run delgado disc with I9s and love that too.....the other set above is on a FS bike but both are fantastic IMHO

I know they're nice and light. But are cxrays strong eoungh to build a stiff wheel? I was told not when I was interested in them. They got compared to the dt revolutions. I'm 175lbs. Hugh, you're a strong rider... how's the flex?

Light... Yup! Stiff wheels.. Yup! I think they build up tight! My boy Rich(owner) at Wheelbuilder.com uses them on most of his builds. Exclusively on his high end builds From track to mtn wheels. A bit pricey but worth it!

I'm really pondering a set of Flows as well. I currently have a 32 hole Rhynolite on the back and it's gotten it's share of thrashing and is not too perfect anymore. I am hoping that the Flows will hold up better, but I have my doubts. I just have the one bike and I rarely let it limit what I do, so my wheels are subjected to lots of rocks, 3'-4' drops and as much abuse as I can dish out, sometimes intentional, sometimes unintentional.

I've heard good things about the Flows, but at $85 a pop for the rim I'm not sure that I want to be the guinea pig.

If/when I get them I'll be glad to report on how they work for me.

I love mine. Stiff and strong. As posted you can go 36 hole if you think you need it. I have 32's and work really well. Oh and I am 225 and they are on my FS bike.

The Path is currently building up a set of SS wheels with Flow front and Arch rear

Interesting combo. Why was it that you went with the Arch in the rear instead of going with the full flow'age? Per the website, it is only a few gram difference between each rim...

I got WTB Dual Duty rims on Deore hubs from work just to get me going. I think thee set goes for less than $150.

Now that I have been 29ing and like it, I'm already planning on Crossmax 29ers. Price isn't too bad and I'll drop close to a pound in weight.
