Don't know if this has been a subject in the past. But I started commutting to work 3 times a week.
I bought some lights, a big lock, I bring a soap and a wash rag to clean my self after I get to the office. I bascially start Bastanchury/ St. College(nice little hill) all the way down to Chapman and make a right and I am at work! It takes me about 36 mins of riding, that doesn't include stoplights, but all in all about 45mins or so. Do you guys have any suggestions on commutting? |

I love bike commuting to work or anywhere for that matter. I have a 6 mile (one way) commute, and sometimes twice that if I ride to swim workout before work (two to three times a week). My routine: I drive in to work on Monday with my car loaded with a weeks worth of clothes, towels, and my bike. Then I ride home on Monday and leave the car at work all week so that I can use it during the day for meetings and lunches. I drive the car home on Firday. This way I don't have to worry about packing clothes every day and my load is light, so I just use a messenger bag for my lunch and tool kit. I scrub down with a small towel and water after cooling off a bit at work. I leave some lotion and deoderant at work too. Some people use handi wipes, but I've never tried them.
I also got myself a beater fixed gear road bike. I didn't feel safe riding my precious mountain bike and leaving it locked up, even in a safe neighborhood. A mountain bike's not made for the road anyways - wrong gearing and geometry not to mention energy wasting shocks IMO. Plus the fixie makes things so much more interesting during the commute, which can get dull...road riding ya know. It has really strengthened my legs and helped me build a smooth spin, not to mention costing less than $200 total build. |

I usually ride 1-2 a week to work. I'll bring clothes with me the day before to change into. I tried riding a road bike to work but it was no fun.
From Associated Rd, to Bastanchury, up and over the hill to Brea Blvd, down to Harbor, cross the 91 and I'm there. Its about 6 miles or so and it takes about 25 min. Sometimes I'll cross through Craig Park or ride part of the loop near the dam, and I'll usually hit up the loop on the way home. |
