Default Cyclocross - Frames

Thinking about getting a cyclocross frame to build up as a SS. What frames are out there are that great for a SS setup? What do you recommend?

What frame material do you prefer and what's your budget?

Kona, Surly,Independant Fab, the list goes on and on. Like Rob say's it depends on your preferences. Myself I like steel, but to each their own!

For a painless SS setup I know Surly has one. Lots of guys around here ride a Cross Check and love it. It's a bit heavy. Salsa makes frame that you can run SS. You could go custom like IF but that's big bucks. I have a Lemond Propad that I converted to SS using a ENO eccentric hub and it works great. Much cleaner look than the tensioner.

Craig, the Bianchi the Rob posted is awesome. Also, checkout Soulcraft. They make a custom frame that will grow hair back on your head!

Easily singlespeedable? Voodoo Wazoo, or Kona Sutra, Surly Cross check, or maybe a Salsa casserole or Specialized Tricross (SSpeed only). If you don't care about UCI racing, I'd get that Bianchi Roger with the disc brakes.

I'd also suggest something like the Surly.

What have you guys heard about the specialized tricross... Really I am looking for a cyclocross bike that handles like a moutain bike...not a road bike. Is that possible??

The whole reason I am thinking about this is because I went and watched a cyclocross race on Sunday. It looks like a lot of fun to race.... Besides, I think I could kick some butt out there...

I'm getting a IRO Rob Roy in a month or so. If I wanted to buy one and have it right away I'd get a Bianchi San Jose. $600 for a SS CX bike.

CJ, you may want to talk w/Frank. He's on our Tue. Road Rage ride. He's got a Specialized Tricross SS. He was racing it in Irvine on Sunday.

An interesting thread and can't wait to see a build up of this if you decide to get one. I have much respect for not only the bike but the rider itself especially after I saw a rider pound up Cholla in one.

I am not selling the Yeti anytime soon, thanks Justin!,it only took 6 months to get and I love the bike!

I think the San Jose in Rob's pix might be my old one?
Good ride, raced it last season at some CX races and commuted with it in MN, a great ride and cheap!

I now have the Roger, perfect for CX, light and bombproof but ssadly no longer made.
If you are going to race pro disc is a no-no but it is much easier to decend Chutes with disc then canti's

The pic I found of that San Jose was off a Google search, I think it's pretty much stock. It's a steel frame.

I don't think you are going to find a cross bike that handles like a mountain bike. I don't think you would really like it either, espcially if you are going to race. Most of the cross courses I ride really suit a cross bike with more roadie gemortry and super skinny tires. Depends on what class you are going to do to. In Class A or B you'll want a true cross bike.

Cross racing is super fun. Extermely intese cardio workout.

Great minds think alike Glad you found one too. I bet you got a better deal though. I hear those WTB singleduty hubs wont take 200+ lbs stomping around on 76 gear inches though. I'm thinking Phil KiSS-disc hubs....Oh-Snap!! You're gonna run those Bad-A$$ Cole wheels aren't you!?

Dang!! I'm bummed you "outed" yourself before we could show up on a ride with matching bikes...
