![]() December 12, 2007 Liberty University Pledges ‘Good Clean Fun’ at New Sports Park By ERINN MORGAN Students at Liberty University, founded in 1971 by the televangelist Jerry Falwell, are not allowed to watch R-rated movies, drink alcohol or dance. But soon their campus in Lynchburg, Va., may feature downhill mountain-biking trails, zip-lines and year-round skiing and snowboarding slopes. Falwell’s son, Jerry Falwell Jr., the chancellor at Liberty, has announced plans for the development of a sports park on the 5,000-acre, university-owned Liberty Mountain that flanks the campus. It will be open to students and the public. “Good, clean fun is what it is,” Falwell Jr. said. “If you ask most students, they’d say it’s a cultural shock to come here. They have a curfew, a dress code and have to go to chapel and church. It’s a challenge for us to make it a fun, positive experience. These recreational opportunities help keep them focused in the right direction.” The first phase of the project, scheduled to be in place by next summer, includes hiking and biking trails, a ski lift and a Snowflex slope, constructed from a monofilament fiber. At $3 million, it is expected to be the most expensive part of the plan. Over the next few years, an additional $2 million will be channeled into other features, like the downhill bike trails. Falwell said financing through a local bank would pay for the project, but that admission fees charged to the public would eventually pay for the park’s construction costs. “This is a great thing for us,” said Jenni Thurman, a senior at Liberty and editor of The Liberty Champion, the university’s newspaper. “It’s extremely close to the campus, and students can get out of the dorm room, turn off the Xbox and get some exercise.” Others wonder whether an evangelical university is the right location for such sports, whose identities were forged by anti-establishment athletes. “Downhill mountain bikers like to chug beer and cuss and have tattoos,” said Brandon Reynolds, a mechanic at Bikes Unlimited, a cycling shop in Lynchburg. “I don’t know if you want to pull that riffraff into your college. The conservative kid from Iowa who comes to school there isn’t prepared for that world.” Outdoor recreation programs have proliferated at universities in the past 10 years, but they have been more in the realm of climbing walls and ropes courses, said Chris Nute, a board member of the Association of Outdoor Recreation and Education. Falwell Jr. said that the sports park would help Liberty increase its student body, in addition to offering “alternatives to what is called recreation at most colleges.” Liberty has 10,400 students. “Recruitment is one of the main reasons we’re doing this,” he said. “Our goal is to get to 25,000 students here.” The mission is in line with the plans that Jerry Falwell, who died in May, had for the university. “The last day before Dad passed away, we drove up on the mountain and I asked him, ‘Are you sure this is what you want to do?’” Falwell Jr. said. “And he said: ‘Absolutely. I think it would be the greatest thing for students. Look how much they are enjoying the property already.’” The biggest physical limitation Liberty faces is that the mountain, with an elevation of 1,360 feet, is decidedly height-challenged for longer bike or ski runs. “It’s sort of just a hill there,” said Beat von Allmen, owner of Alpentech, a Salt Lake City company consulting on Liberty Mountain’s development. The mountain’s 500-foot vertical rise is sufficient for skiing, mountain biking and zip-line runs. The next step in the park’s development involves a $500,000 ski lift that will be installed next spring. Once in place, work can begin on erecting a Snowflex slope, with its moguls and jumps. |
