Let's Ride
|
When talking about the price of bicycles to my non-cycling friends I tend to avoid the topic. Recently the conversation came up with a friend that owns a Ski Boat, his point was that paying $4000 for a bicycle is completely out of the question. But he paid $25,000 for his boat and uses it once a month during the summer and on a one or two week vacation sometimes. I ride my bike 3 or 4 times a week. So who gets the most for their money?
What he does not understand is that my bike (and most likely your’s) is not to ride to 7-11 for a get six-pack. MTN biking is how I clear my head, get my exercise, socialize with friends, enjoy the outdoors and most importantly get my therapy and you can’t put a price on that. So to summarize: if MTN biking is what you do an expensive bike is money well spent – just my opinion. Sorry for the long post. David

It's all relative. My gf buys a small purse for $300 and thinks it's a good deal. I think it's crazy. But spending $500 on a set of bicycle hubs seems perfectly rational to me, despite the fact that in all reality, those hubs won't make the bike perform much better than a $500 complete bike.
At least when your buddy sells his boat (because he doesn't use it), he'll get some money out of it. There is practically no value in used bikes. But like you said, you're getting your money's worth out your bike's use.

Everybody else has seen them, and unfortunately, I don't ride with Winston or Allison enough, so I don't have many good photos.

people at my work are always sticker shocked when the ask how much did your pay for you bike(s). I always ask them "how much do you think it costs?" they always say 300.00? LOL. the best example of "it cost too much:, is the same guys are like "yeah i just bought a plasma TV for 6,000.00. I laugh in their face. you must be a hardcore couch potato. either you have the disease or you don't

Just yesterday I was chatting with a couple of co-workers. The conversation turned to what we did over the weekend. I told them I went mountain biking & like many of you I had a tough time explaining what it is that we do out there on trails. They couldn't understand the allure. Of course they asked about the climbs, & the descents. And as I answered, they just kept grimacing at me, and making faces like I was crazy to even consider this enjoyment let alone a sport.
Finally I just told them to try it, but that there was a catch, the catch was that they could only do this "mountain biking" on 3 thousand dollar bikes. Of course I was just going for shock value by this time, but their looks imediately changed to puzzlement. Then one asked me how i was able to find motorcycles for so cheap. These guys have motorcycles, jet skis, boats, campers, & all kinds of stuff they rarely even use, so naturally they thought I was just like them and talking about motorcycles. When I explained that i was talking about bicycles you should have seen their jaws drop. That just goes to show that not everyone has the imagination or cajones to do it. And that's one of the reasons I like it. By the way, I'm new to board, and keepin it real! ![]()

The truth is that bikes are way over priced. Look, I'm just going to say it. Just as much and more goes into building a motorcycle. A bike is really just that without an engine etc. $5200 for a carbon road bike or a sweet s-works? come on. Lets be realistic. Just saying.
Also, I love fox shocks but $700 for the new 29er? Man you're killing me. I guess I have to wait a year. |

Kevin and Lee -y'all have more time than I do!
Lee - I don't ride with Winston enough either !For everyone else... my cube at work is filled with photos. So people know I'm nuts. They don't ask how much the bikes are. I would just answer "a lot" anyway. |

When someone asks me how much my bikes cost, I tell them and then before their jaw has a chance to hit the ground, I say; "If you really like music and the quality of the sound, then you buy a really good stereo system!" They almost always can relate to that.

I think the only crowd that understands other than other MTB folks are the road racers. They dump so much cash into parts for their cars. They like CF parts to drop pounds, we like CF parts to drop grams.

Even if you own an "expensive" bike, MTB riding is very cheap entertainment. If you assign any value to the health benefits, it is bas |
