Default So talk to me about XC frames ~ older days gone by models

In a nut shell my wife has taken up riding. One of the things that held her back was the POS bike she had didn't really fit her. Once I got her on my Tracer she loves it. So now I need another bike because it seems she is keeping mine.

I just don't have the scratch to buy a really nice new XC bike right now. I see people upgrading all the time and almost giving away their old stuff (like 1~5 years old maybe). Anyway I just missed a used Intense tracer frame on e bay. It sold for 275.00. Uh, those were like 1,600.00 or so new. I know Mcgyver picked up a used Specialized Epic that looks nice.

What other frames should I be looking for? This will be used for XC only but would still like 4" of travel or so.

I'm open to all brands so lets hear it.

For a budget minded XC bike, look at the GT, Trek or even some of the Specialized models. The 2007 I-Drives are clearing out of most GT dealers. GT is rebranding this year and completely redesigned the 2008 line. You should be able to find a good deal on the 2007 demos or discontinued models.

What size frame are you looking for?

Wheelworld has some smaller Anthem and Trance frames for $299 right now.

Uhhh, I'm not looking for a budget new bike. That would be a down grade from what I had.
I'm asking about used high end frames that I see getting dumped on e bay and MTBR. I could spend less and have 4X the bike that way.

I'm 5'8 and my Med Intense and med bullet fit perfect.

Sounds like you should just check ebay and emptybeer until you find one you like?

JeffJ is right. These are pretty nice if she is a small/xtra small.

Tracer ?

I wouldn't be searching for a 26" XC bike, though. Unfortunately 29er FS bikes aren't old enough to be on sale (well, wait til the Jet9 comes out, maybe people will be selling their Sultan's or something).

I've never had a 26" XC bike. But, look for Burners, Epic's, Fuel's, Tracer. You can always scan through the classifieds. I'm sure you'll find a few that catch your eye.

Stop crying, at least you have a wife that rides and you get a new bike.

Oh I'm loving it really. I've been wanting her to ride for years. One day out of the blue SHE asked me if we could ride the loop. I got her on that bike knowing I would have to give it up. It won't be long before she drops my fat azz on my bullit.

I like the Tracer but had it for so long I wouldn't mind something else.

this would be good.

I think Endo Verendo mentioned something not long ago about possibly selling his Flux?

If you want more aggressive types of bikes for XC, Intense Spider, Turner Flux and SC Blur XC (or Classic). If you want more XC oriented bikes, Specialized Epic and SC Superlight.

You might be able to get a good deal on one of these bikes via Craigslist, MTBR or other local ads. eBay I find it is hard to find bargains these days.

Dave can ride pretty hard and he likes a bike that handles well, and considering that he's not very tall, I wouldn't think there would be any good reason for him to settle for a 29er when there are so many good 26ers out there.

Dave,
If you liked your Tracer, maybe you'd like a Titus. And if not that, there are a lot of Epics/Stumpjumpers out there as well. Too bad you missed the 2004 5.5s getting blown out at Performance (old Supergos).

How can you grow tired of a bikel like the tracer, that's a sweet bike!!! I could never afford one. Superlights from SC are usually pretty good bikes and you can usually find them on ebay, especially with the new redesign.
