My Ells Joker has been at the Path since Sunday morning, getting a drivetrain rehab thanks to the big sale. Was supposed to be ready for me tomorrow, but on the way home from work tonight i got the call no mountain biker ever wants to get:
Tani: Yeah, we're almost done with your bike, but ... your frame is cracked. Me: Whaaaa?!!! Seems the front triangle has given up the ghost; the original swingarm also cracked a few years ago and was replaced. I'm not too hopeful about a warranty replacement this time around, though, cuz the frame has been out of production for a year or two. And last time I e-mailed Tony Ellsworth about a shock question, he basically told me he "didn't have the bikes anymore." We'll see what they have to say tomorrow. In the meantime, it may be time to start shopping around. The wife has already told me, "Do what you have to do." ![]()

Awww Toby, that really is awful, but now you can get that Turner that all Ells riders really want!

An RFX, unfortunately, is not within the budget. Besides, I don't know if I could look myself in the mirror every day if i turned to the Homer dark side.

ODB already owns an IH. The 6 Point 6 frame (at The Path) would be perfect for him!
I remember when ODB brought the Joker "out of retirement" during a Chantry ride. He was proud of The Joker.... Proud of the NEW Lyrik fork... the new parts.... he even told me that I wouldn't be seeing the Horse for a while. Believe it or not, I believed him! Again, sorry to hear the news. Christmas miracles have been known to happen...

Well, just got off the phone with Ellsworth: As i suspected, they don't have any frames available for warranty since the Joker has been out of production for a couple years now. I was offered a credit toward a new frame, but even with the discount, their stuff is out of my price range for now. I'm bummed cuz the timing for this is really bad (lotsa money going out the door these days), but at the same time i'm excited about the prospect of getting a new ride. I've got a couple things in mind at this point, but need to do a bit more research. Any suggestions for a 5.5- to 6.5-inch travel frame in the sub-$1,500 range? 135 mm hub spacing is a must.

I'm guessing you're looking for frame only? You could always look into getting a Specialized Pitch and ditch the build ![]() |

The Pitch is one of the options i'm considering. ![]() This is on my shortlist, though i'd like to get away from single-pivot, just to have something different from the Joker.

ODB- Purchase the 6 Point frame (great deal) and pick up another rear wheel. Will still be money ahead! The STR swap meet is coming up... get one there!

I'd check the warranty on your frame. Most manufacturers will cover you against manufacture defects for a good amount of time. My rear swing arm broke just above the weld on my Haro and they fully covered it. My swing arm and my frame are covered for five years. You might get lucky and they'll offer you an upgrade to cover it. Either way... sorry to hear the bad news, I hope things work out.
