Oh man, I've heard shingles is gnarly but that sounds really bad. I hope you feel better ASAP!!

I've spent the last week discovering the exotic disease shingles. For those who don't know (I didn't), it's chicken pox, Part 2.

Apparently once you get chicken pox, the virus never leaves your body. It lies dormant, waiting for your immune system to let its guard down. Then it travels along a nerve and erupts through your nerve endings, leaving a blistering rash and searing pain, like something out of a bad sci-fi movie. Plus you get fever, exhaustion, headache, etc.

It appears in just one nerve area - in my case, it picked the right side of my face. Under my right eye it's swollen, bruised and rashed, my nose is crusty rashed, and the worst part is the searing pain in my teeth. The nerve in that section goes through my right top teeth and ends on my right front tooth. Aaarrrrggghhh!!!!!!

So much for exercise and biking... At least I haven't been eating that much, but it's going to take a lot more than that to drop pounds.

Hope next week is better!

Sorry about your shingle, get better.

I broke the 270, I am at 268. my bike shorts fit better and I kept up with my buddies at the Fullerton loop last night.

Would it be possible to put those updates on the front page? It would be cool to see everyone's progress.

I put mine in my signature and update it periodically.. might save the post owner (ODB) from having to do to much maintenance of everyones numbers.

This sounds like a good plan. At each monthly mark, though, i will update the first post with people's progress.

I'm curious if anyone has had a similar issue to myself. Since I've started eating healthier I have noticed an increase in upset stomachs, and general gastro intestinal discomfort. I haven't drasticly changed my diet, simply replaced unhealthy greasy foods with lowfat, low cholesteral versions of the same foods. I haven't cut out meat or added any unusal foods, I'm just having trouble digesting the healthier version of my regular diet.

If anyone else is feeling like this let me know, it's very odd.

I had that happen to me before... I think it's a way of your stomach saying F-U for dieting.
I know its weird....and later if you go back to your old habits (greasy food), the pain will be 3x worse.

Specifically, what did you eat that upset your tum? Sometimes the low-fat versions of certain foods have strange ingredients and can cause gastro-intestinal discomfort. Fat substitutes will do this (like "Olestra" in Pringles).

It could be a number of things though. Certain foods are more acidic than others, so that could be part of the issue too.

graves.z - Your gonna have to be more specific.. do you got gas, cramps, or the $hits? Have you increased your fiber intake? What foods are you eating?

I have been battling weight all my adult life.. here is what works for me and makes me feel the best. I fill the majority of my diet with things that have been alive at one time (basically, animals or plants). I eat lean meats, egg whites, fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, nuts (peanut butter). I cut way back on milk and other dairy. Other things I throw in based on my workout plans are PowerBars, yougert, kashi go lean cereal, fruit juice. geezzz... i'm giving all my secerets....

The hard part is the mental game of not giving into temptation to go get burritos and burgers..

You shouldn't have many problems with fresh fruit , fresh multi colored vegies & chicken breasts in various dishes. They will give you gas though, which can be socially unacceptable or entertaining depending on how you look at it

Maybe try some Beano?

Also, on the hurting tummy...Soy will give lots of people bad GI side effects.

Thanks for the replies. To answer some of the questions, I have been much more gassy, and I feel sometimes like I have the sh*ts but I don't. Nothing major discomfort-wise (I had the stomach flu bad twice last year so I know bad discomfort).

My diet was mostly fast food, though I made sure stuff like burgers and tacos had lots of lettuce. I also ate lots of sugar based candy (Mmmmm sour patch kids). But now I have some oatmeal in the morning (the only real new thing in my diet), and I have fruits and veggies with my lunch, Pasta, Soup, sandwich, or sometimes steak for dinner. I try to steer clear of fat substitutes and artificial fillers and just eat less grease and more lean meats with more veggies.

Putting it down in words makes my diet look even less healthy.

My guess is fiber shock.. Try not eating carbs with protiens... eat carbs and veggies or protiens and veggies.. Also, eat fruit alone and let digest before eating other stuff.. I believe this practice is called Food Combining.. you might be able to find some stuff on the web about it if you want more detail.. basically it promotes digestion. hope some of this helps.. Stick with it.. your body needs to adjust.

Ok Peeps...I'm in on this one...even if I can't claim a prize. My last weigh in was at 245, PRE 4x4 chow-down. I haven't had a chance to weigh myself since.

I had a similar problem last year when I changed my diet....mucho gas...I used it as entertainment...dropping bombs in the shuttle van...I would also drop them on the ride...it's funny to let one go then hear the rider behind you react as he rides thru it

i haven't followed the whole thread so idk if its already implemented.

So how about a google spread sheet for the participant of the weight loss challenge, and someone updates it weekly, in that way we have an idea who is the biggest loser on a weekly basis.

just a thought
