Since the topic of food has quieted down, aside from Gene eating french fries and other good food!! what did everyone eat for lunch today??

Still not as healthy as staying away from chips entirely, but Justin and I really like the Baked Lays and Baked Cheetos. Obviously we keep them to a minimum, though.

Also had more raw broccoli florets (I like to eat them first cause they're full of fiber, which fills you up and keeps you feeling full longer), yogurt, string cheese (we don't get a lot of fat in our diet, so I'm not too worried about that, and cyclists can use the calcium/protein), turkey sandwich..

Getting ready to have my afternoon apple in about 20 minutes or so.

Need some energy for my workout tonight, so i allowed myself a blackened-fish taco from this awesome place near work (mmmm, Baja Fish Tacos). Ditched the tortilla from a second taco and put the fish on a side salad with just a touch of vinaigrette and a lot of pico de gallo. Had a tangelo about an hour and a half later, and will have an apple in another hour or so. Trying to keep the metabolism humming by eating often.

Broccoli is actually a great source of calcium too. Broccoli farmers just don't have as much money as dairy farmers so it's not marketed all that much!

Gene - reminds me of my girls they wanted junk food last night. Too bad! If I am eating healthy so is everyone in my household. I think my dad will be moving out. I am the cook so - I can cook healthy and they have to eat it.

Okay after a major hangover on New Years Day - I am recovered. That won't be happening again anytime soon. I started being good yesterday and hopefully I can make it uphill without all that huffing and puffing.

Lunch today: chicken and veggies.
Snack: Orange

I am hungary!

I am throwing away my Christmas candy TODAY.

Good luck to everyone!!!

Just a note of caution, family and coworkers will appreciate it. Beware of high fiber cereals such as Kashi Go Lean Crunch

When I started my weight loss journey I found that brand to be a very tasty, low cal, low carb high fiber cereal

At least for me, about 4 hours after eating it I would light up the room like a P.G.& E. power plant. It was relentless and ugly

I read were your body will adjust and get used to it. NOT TRUE. I would then have to stop and go cold turkey

But it was so good and I was addicted so I would always back slide and fall off the wagon

It took F.A. (Fiber Anonymous) for me to finally kick the habit before I lost my job, family and friends

Believe it...well most of it

I am doing a low carb diet even though it may not be quite as healthy as low calorie (want to mention I am watching those as well), but basically cut most fiber out of my diet. My family used to hate me when I had 2 bowls of mini wheats a day, but now Im not even forced to go and have to in fact force myself to do it. It's like an instant change. I do need to get more ruffage to start back up, but it sure is nice.

I had a soup and sandwich. (not too healthy I know)

Normally I have a half turkey sandwich on wheat bread w/ veggenaise (non dairy veggie based fat free mayonaise), some raw colloflower, carrots, cucumber, and brocolli with fat free Hidden Valley. It keeps my energy up all afternoon.

I like the Kashi Go Lean Crunch.. mostly sprinkle a little on yogurt to add some fiber and crunch.. I have never had an adverse side effect (gas or $hits) from it..

I had my usual breakfast: wheat bagel with a slice of melted cheese and two eggs on it. Mountain biked for a hard hour this morning and did yoga last night. For snacks I have a 180 calorie fiber snack bar and a banana. For lunch I had veggie brown rice sushi (280 cals) and frozen yogurt (200 cals). For dinner I am going to eat what I usually eat for dinner - steamed broccoli and brussel sprouts and a glass of red wine. I tend to eat 1200-1700 calories a day, and I am vegetarian (though I eat small quantities of seafood sometimes). I hate big dinners and tend to eat most my food in the first half of my day. I usually get 200% my daily value of fiber and enough protein to get by.

Who else is vegetarian? What do you eat?

I'm a big dinner lover... That's amazing that you get enough protein with that diet, but cool.

Couldn't be a veggie head. I like mah red meat too much!

Cutting out the wine (I know it's tough, I've been doing it also) would be a biggie. Plenty of carbs and calories.

Not a vegetarian, but i'll share my favorite ways to have brussel sprouts. steamed, with a splash of malt vinegar and dash of salt, is really good. but my absolute favorite way is to roast them. first, par-cook the sprouts by either steaming or boiling them briefly, dunk them in cool water to "shock" them, then toss them in olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Put 'em in a 350-degree oven for 20-25 minutes, or till they have begun to brown a bit. Shift them around in the pan at least once during the roasting. Sooooo good, especially the crispy outer leaves you get.

Talking OMR = 150 lbs @ 5' 8"... and don't want to lose!

Something I've done most of my life (67 years) is eat between 4 to 7 times a day... doctor once told me that it keeps your blood sugar & insilin more constant. Of course the constant biking keeps the metabolism fired up as well... which keeps the weight off. I also have found that whole milk seems to be much more filling... or slim milk with a lot of cream added. The reverse problem that I have is loosing too much weight from a ride like VQ, Traverse.... or Bell Ridge. You don't want to get sick when you're skinny!

Breakfast was 3 hard boild eggs, two without the yolk along with left over chicken sald from yesterday also with a glass of milk. Lunch was souplantation, nathan treated me cause he got a gift cirtificate for xmas. I had mushrooms and cucumbers topped with ranch dressing. I think I'm gonna go to bed a bit early and skimp out on dinner except for a chicken breast.

Keep drinking lots of water people.

edit: this thread is going to get rediculously long, maybe a temporary section would be nice i.e. a thread on what you ate, a weight thread, recipies. IDK you coud go to a diet forum for that, but here it's nice getting support from people you've met and know. just a thought.

the big thing for me is that i love garlic and red pepper flakes, so the dish is pretty spicy.

olive oil is better for you than other stuff but is still fat.
parmesan cheese adds calories too

when i make this it feeds both of us twice (usually pack the leftovers for lunch a day or so later)
sweet thanks Bucky! i like my food spicy so the pepper does not bother me... if you want some really hot peppers i can hook you up, just remind me before we ride together again. I'll try this dish out soon, well a variation of it.

I'm a vegetarian, although I lapse at times. In fact, I am an aspiring vegan, because I truly believe it is the healthiest way to eat. There are many sources of plant protein, and I think the need for large amounts of protein is overstated. Unfortunately, meat can be very tasty (as long as you shut off the part of your brain that knows how bad it is for your health/animals/the environment).

I was strongly influence by "The Food Revolution" by John Robbins, heir to the Baskin Robbins fortune who became a vegan, and "The China Study" by T. Colin Campbell, PhD. Even if you're a meat eater, you should read them, so you know the whole picture...

Here's my favorite vegetarian (or vegan) high-protein meal - Hoppin' John (a southern favorite):

1 large onion, chopped
2+ garlic cloves, chopped
2 cans black-eyed peas (with liquid)
1/4 tsp. ground allspice (optional but yummy)
1/8 tsp.+ cayenne pepper
3-4 Tbsp soy sauce
Salt and black pepper
1 bag Trader Joe's frozen brown rice (the best!!!!)

Saute onion for 5 min; add garlic and saute 1 min more. Add beans with their liquid, spices and soy sauce. Simmer until yummy. Microwave bag of brown rice for 4 minutes (easy!). Serve beans on rice. Add the following toppings:

-shredded smoked cheddar cheese (at all big grocery markets in the fancy cheese/deli section) - just a sprinkle if you're dieting, none if you're vegan
-sour cream (see above)
-chopped tomato
-chopped green onion
-chopped fresh Italian parsley

Approved by KeepsWhatHappens (not a vegetarian).
