PacMan

I started the build last night and finished it off this morning with the help of one of the mechanics at work.

I had originally planned on thieving most of the parts from my 26er HT, then we saw that the XT rear der on it was pretty tweaked and the cassette would need to be replaced in the near future. So, my EP abilities kicked in and I ended up with a new drivetrain.

In the pics you'll see a huge stack of spacers on the steerer. That was all intentional. I didnt want to cut the steerer anymore than it already was in case I want to upgrade the frame later. After the test ride, I did put all but 2 of them on top of the stem though. The bars were just too high with them below.

I got the frame at Jenson's parking lot sale back in September for $60. I went basic on the wheels too. Just in case I decide I don't like 29ing, I'm not out a ton of dough. If I really like 29ing, I can always get better wheels and upgrade the frame. Everything else is pretty decent stuff.

Final build specs:

Frame: Zion 737 29er frame, medium
Fork: Rock Shox Reba SL dual air
Shifters: SRAM X9
Rear Der: SRAM X9
Front Der: Shimano XT
Cranks: Race Face Evolve XC w/ int BB
Cassette: SRAM 980
Chain: SRAM 991
Brakes: Shimano Deore hydros
Bars: Easton EA30
Stem: Salsa
Seatpost: Thomson
Wheels: WTB Dual Duty w/ Deore hubs
Tires: Kenda Nevegal 2.2

I actually bought some Acids last week. I'm saving them for the SS. If I like them, we'll see...

I'm really looking foward to your rr on this. You're more honest in your reports and not saying people aren't, it's just they have a new bike and can't really be subjective. This is the first Zion I've seen with gears. I looked at this bike a while back and I like the geometry more so then some of the other offerings. I think I'd like it as a ss though.
