Default More Rain

It's pouring out here in RSM now. I am real close to O'Neill Park and we are getting a a good shot of rain from a localized cell right now.

Picture 1.jpg

It's gonna be real wet out there tomorrow.

Probably time to stay off the trails for a couple days.

Seems a lot of folks are just going out anyways. I went to Starbucks a little while ago and there was a car that went thru the drive thru and the bikes were just caked with mud. Then I get home and I see a neighbor who I introduced to mtb'ing and told him about staying off the trails after it rains and he's outside hosing off his bike. He went to Chino Hills and got kicked out, but not before he rode in a couple miles and made a mess. Good thing is the ranger made them walk their bikes out and promised them they'd get a ticket next time (both riders are cops).

Excellent...a few puddles and soft spots...but otherwise...excellent.

Overall the trail was in good shape today. There was one really muddy switchback on the bottom. Above cocktail it was a bit soft on Old San Juan as well. I saw Keith climbing when we were on our way down. I think I saw Padre too, were you in the Path Jersey?

Default "staying off trails after rain"

It really depends on the trail...different locations, conditions, soil...

It rained hard last nite in North County. Kept an 8AM meetup at Denk Mtn thinking we'd bag it and go for coffee. All summer it's been soft red dust...figured it'd be real sloppy. Decided to start up the trail & check it out...it was perfect. No more than a coupla puddles anywhere (rode thru, not around). Even less mud than STR ride at Daley last weekend. And perfect traction...no wheelspin going up, no sliding going down(so unfortunately no excuse for not making some of the uphill switchbacks other than technique & fitness).

Point is, "staying off trails after rain" depends on the trail. Not at LPQ for sure, not at Calaveras, but Denk and Daley seem good.

MTB Bill has a wet trails rating link I think, although not sure I agree with all last time I saw it (of course it's subjective and dependent on many things tho...thanks Bill for all your work).

The hairpins are a total mess towards the bottom, very claggy wet clay on the bends for some reason. Soon as you're out of the switchbacks its good.
