Live Free, Ride Hard

I have recently discovered a cool little show on Encore WAM called 'Drop In'. It's a fun little show with some great North Shore style riding (I believe it was done in Canada by Canadians). Aynway I was watching it with my 6 year old twin girls all curled up on the couch, I asked if they thought it was cool and if they would want to try such a thing. They promply told me that girls don't ride mtn bikes and that it is only for boys!!!!! Wow I was just blown away and depressed at the same time. So now what I'm looking for is a good bike video that either focuses on the female rider OR a video with a decent segment on the women. Mostly action scenes but maybe an interview or something so my girls can see the riders just talking. Any help would be much appreciatted. Thanks.

How about taking your video camera out and shooting some footage of Allison, and "Spokes", Sauce", Surlygal, SDyeti, Shannon, CC and some of the other STR gals riding...
You can make you own MTB girls video ![]()

You could always try bringing them to a race at Fontucky...STR has plenty of women that race diff disciplines DH, & XC and have a great time doing it.
Make sure you introduce them to the STR women (Allison, Denmother,Wrecker, Sauce and everyone I forgot - I know I did) before the race and let them learn how exciting it is to cheer on the racers...and to see that even GIRLS like to ride, and it's cool! Just an idea... Lynn - same wave length just couldn't type that fast Girls Rock![]()

The episode of "Epic Conditions" on the MTB scene at Whistler currently airing on the Weather Channel features a couple of women pros. Set your DVR for it. Also, some the North Shore Extreme vids (4 and 7 are the ones i recall) have brief segments with female riders rippin' it up.

You know the idea about Fontucky isn't a bad one, it would be totally worth the 8 hours of vacation to do it.
Thanks! Do any of the big clothing manufacturers make decent cool looking gear for kids around 6? I'm not looking for pink cutsey stuff that is plastered with Barbie or Disney but cool looking pink cutsey stuff that can hold up a bit and make them feel safe and sort of look like daddy or some of the pics I've shown them from STR. (one of my girls is really afraid of getting hurt and is watching me write this right now to make sure I ask!) Thanks again and I appreciate the responses. I got really freaked tonight when they said what they did...not sure why really, I just know I've never wanted my girls to think they couldn't do anything because they're girls! I won't push biking on them but I know that it was everything to me growing up.

Do they know how to ride a bike yet? (It was hard to tell from what you wrote).
It may be easier preaching to the converted ![]() ![]() Wow...you are a great dad! I see so many of my students (girls) who think they can't or shouldn't (insert here) because they are girls. Makes me sad. |

They can't ride without training wheels which is sort of an embarrasement for me.
I've neglected their riding mostly due to the lack of a street to ride on (no sidewalks in my neighborhood either). They have their first bikes at their grandmas so I was going to buy them bikes that are the next size up. I think if I get them out there on a regular basis that the training wheels will come off pretty quick. ![]()

Sure thing! Then you will have something to all do together.
Check out Pearl Izumi http://www.pearlizumi.com/shop.php?p...&mode=products or http://www.upsideover.com/Cycling-s/...FQGdPAod5Qit_A It's a little pricey, but they have a few things for kids. Or I found this http://www.aerotechdesigns.com/child.htm More cost conscious and some cool designs (Curious George, The Wild Things, etc) Quote:

As far as I'm concerned, my daughter can be whatever she wants. The sky's the limit. Gender has nothing to do with it. I plan to instil this in her too.
My hopes are along the lines of astrophysicist, xc racer, right winger for the winter olympics... no particular order though.

How about some of the STR ladies post a picture they are proud of...finishing a gnarly climb, blazing a downhill, jumps/drops (think Sauce doing that drop taller than her...to flat)! We don't need any tv stars...we have some great female riders right here for your daugthers to see
![]() Okay, since I brought it up, I'll go first... October 2005...jump clinic with Marla Streb...somewhere in SLO |

you can also show them girls doing other sports like surfing, snowboarding, skiing, those vids should be easier to find too, then relate to them that women can do the same sports as men...even show them the WNBA(that kind of hurt to say but its for the good of your kids, so I will sacrifice)
