Default San Diego:New Trail might OPEN at Daley Ranch

Here is your chance to give back...
San Diego: Daley Ranch Trail Work 8AM-12PM

Daley Ranch End of The Year Trail Work

Saturday, December 8th, 8am - 12pm

Meet at the parking lot at the north end of La Honda Drive • Escondido, CA 92027

Join SDMBA and the Daley Ranch Trailwork Crew for our annual end-of-the-year event. The Rangers have given us another challenging and exciting project! We will be working on a 'closed' trail. The final product will be an 'open' trail!

Since 1996 when Daley Ranch was purchased by the City of Escondido and established as a habitat preserve, there has been some disagreement between the City of Escondido and certain trail users about which trails at Daley Ranch were viable and legal. Only the trails listed on the Map are considered part of the trail system. This is a momentus occasion to have the opportunity to open a 'closed' trail on the property.

Following the trailwork, SDMBA will raffle off prizes to all volunteers, white elephant style. If you've participated before, you know this can be interesting. Sorry, the red GoGirl Hotpants found a permanent owner at last year's event.

Please RSVP to Minette so we can be sure to have enough tools. Also- I will need your contact info in case we need to reschedule due to rain. You can also call me to confirm. 858-442-7090. Please feel free to contact me if you are intersted in other ways to volunteer at Daley Ranch.

For more info on Trailwork see the SDMBA website.
You can find general info about Daley Ranch on the City of Escondido website.

Are you thinking about cancelling the LPQ and doing this instead?

I've been meaning to get in on some trail work.

I was going to send you a PM about that. Your the only one that has a "yes". I was going to ask if you wanted to do trail work instead. Daley is one of my top 5 favorite trails so I would like to be part of something like opening a new trail.

All joking aside, I think your right. I've tried pretty hard to make it out to a trail day over the last 2 years, but I've never been able to make it.

From what I understand, the trail that is going to be worked will be a great "re-addition" to the park.

If you ever rode Daley before the took over it, you most likely will know the trail that I 'm describing.

The top of the trail is located near the top of the Sage trail (The 3 mile warm up climb) about 1/4th of a mile prior to the the Coyote Trail (first singletrack going off to the left). If you remember going across the really rocky section on the climb that immediately makes a hard left you are right at the upper end of it. The bottom is down the Caballo trail quite a ways.

Here is a quickly done image of what I'm talking about

If this is it, it will be really cool. As long as it does not get turned into a full-blown road.

Here is the trail in red, on a bigger map for those that aren't sure where that is in Daley Ranch per Bill's map above.

I was riding Daley before the city took over and that
trail is one of my favorites that they went in and
shut down ( there are about 5 others as well).
If they decide to re-open this trail it would be
great, but like you said: As long as it does not get
turned into a full-blown road. The trail work the city
does seems to do more damage than good. If they
have to widden every trail with a scraper, they need
to water it down, fill in the erosion, and compact
it. They just end up making the trail twice as wide
and the first rain comes and washes all the dust out
of the old erosion spots.

I am all for opening old singletrack trails, but not turning them into 5 foot wide roads. It would be great if they
could designate bike only trails...even if they had to
be one way only trails. Caballo trail used to be a nice
easy double and singletrack climb on hard pack....now
that the horses use it to access the park it is total
sand about 6" deep the whole way up.

I am hoping to get out there on Sat and do some work.
