I had a pair of Vans on sale at a bike shop in Whistler, and it just isn't the same. I dunno how people comfortable wear those shoes on flats while DHing and don't slip. Justin was using the spd compatible, but covered, Shimano's, and same thing.

5.10's are just a different breed. The stealth rubber is all that.

Im on the verge of ordering a pair of these Specialized BG Comp from the Path. Does anyone have any feedback on these suckers? The good thing is Tani will order and let me try on before i decide so that's a good thing but just curious what your thoughts are on these shoes.

they're not bad- had a pair right before i switched to sidis and they have a little bump in the insole that puts pressure on some tendon in your foot thus reducing stress. it feels odd at first, but supposedly works.

One thing I've learned when it comes to shoe; Comfort is everything and sometimes you have to pay $$$ for that comfort. Believe me Duan, I have a pair of "el cheapos", only worn once, collecting dust because they hurt after 30 minutes of riding.

We carry all types of 5.10's. High tops, low tops and the overpriced Marzocchi shoes made by 5.10.

Specialized has that whole Body Geometry thing going on. The "bump" is supposed to spread your feet out, relieving stress. There's also a wedge that supposedly keeps your knees "tucked in". I know a guy that had them in size 11(shoe size 10.5). He loves them, says the buckle is 10x's more secure vs. a velcro strap. Personally I ride on M3 Pearls(3-strap), and love them.

so long as the 3 straps are secured in a sturdy fashion unlike my adidas that has what amounts to strings :-/

I'm considering the Specialized or the Sidi's

Default New Shoes

I have 2 yrs on a pair of Specialized BG Comp shoes, and love them. I've always had a easy foot to fit and most shoes overall feel good. But the Specialized BG Comp had a fits like a glove feel from day one, and I think they are plenty stiff for solid pedaling. For warmer Socal riding they have a good amount of mesh to help keep feet cooler. My pair is pretty worn and I'm thinking of buying another.

After trying Sidi, Gaerne, and Shimano I've been using Specialized shoes exclusively for the last 5 yrs. One word of caution -- the carbon soled models don't play well with Crank Brothers pedals.

Shimano carbon soles are the same way. After a short while they wear a large grove where the pedal meets the shoe right around the cleat.

5.10 Ride Report:
As I mentioned in this or another thread, I've been rocking my 7-8 year old Vans with the wafflegrip. I've used these shoes on many types of BMX-type flat pedals. My DH rig currently has the Shimano DX platforms (not DX clipless pedals).

This weekend was the first time to ride DH with anything other than Vans. Because the old shoes were looking a bit tired, I figured I'd step up to "modern" shoe technology with the 5.10.

On the first run at Bootleg on Saturday, it became quickly apparent that the 5.10s have way more traction than the Vans. Admittedly, I think they offered too much traction! With my Vans, if I didn't initially put my foot on the pedal correctly, I could forcefully move it a bit, albeit with a little bit of lifting. With the 5.10s, I had to forcefully lift my foot off the pedals before moving them. Over the day and a half of riding, I did get more used to the incredible traction.

I was happy with the traction the Vans offered, but the 5.10s really stepped it up in the traction department. However, I think they are even to point where there may be a tad too much traction, such as in a case where I need to quickly dab, I am concerened that I may not be able to get my foot off fast enough, which is why I use flats instead of clips in technical conditions. When it comes to dabs, sometimes fractions of a second can save me from a fall.

Other pluses to the 5.10s. The sole feels noticeably stiffer than the Vans. After a bit of riding in the Vans, sometimes my arch felt a little sore. So far, I think the 5.10s are a bit stiffer. On the other hand, I'm comparing them to well-worn, seven-year-old Vans, so I really need to give the 5.10s some time.

Those who've been to Bootleg know there are lots of rocks. You also know about the half mile climb to the top. The 5.10s have great traction for hiking in the rocks. Additionally, even though the sole felt stiffer, the shoes were very comfortable to walk and hike with.

So, so far my impression is generally good. I look forward to giving them more time, and I hope they'll last as long as my Vans.

Default Other sticky rubber for platform pedals

The sticky rubber is what makes 5.10's so good on platforms. I've used 5.10's for years rock climbing and on my bike (different model shoes of course...). But if you're having fit or selection problems, there are other shoes out there that would work just as well, even if not bike-specific signature models. Try a climbing shop or REI and ask for "approach" shoes. Besides 5.10, there's La Sportiva, Merrell, Vasque, Garmont and other brands. They have what you need: sticky rubber with tread, stiff relatively flat sole, good support, and durability.

Sidi Dragons are great for being off the bike for whatever reason. I don't even mind running in them during cyclocross races. Ther retention system won't let your feet slip around or out.
