I have been known to ride with tunes while solo weekdays. HJ and my 3 parks weekday AM ride are the places I'm most likly to do so.
I try and keep the level low so I can hear anyone hollering at me. Any other time it is no tunes, or tunes for all... I find it is actually the hikers who are the larger problem. They seem to walk with their face down in the dirt and never look up! Just try riding Chantry Flats on an early Sat AM and you will notice many of these folks with tunes so loud that they can't hear you yell. I was coming down one of the more nasty sections last time and a hiker was coming up (hiker using the whole trail I might add) and I hollered out my usual "Good Morning!" with no effect. I got closer and tried again, but louder. Again to no effect. So then I stopped and waited for the fun... the hiker walked right up to me and the first thing they saw was my front wheel. BOY were they surprised! My personal opinion on iPods on the trail is that if you wear one, YOU then become responsible for your ownsafety because the chances of you hearing others is significantly diminished. Usually I enjoy the sounds of nature, and my breating and heartbeat but sometimes I like a little music too.

ska+punk+electro+dub+funk+world - whatever, cranked up loud before & after rides - but out on the trails i like/need to be 100% compusmentus & hear the chain clattering about on the cassette or the stick starting to be taken up into the spokes/rd or that mountain lion growling as i approach...
besides i can play song at will in my head, must have memorized thousands of songs, on my last ride i had Dawn Penn's No No No stuck in my brain 'used to be a walkman mixtape then ipod addict, it helps dampen pain + up tempo's - but not good for the highly populated SoCal trails i ride now example of an old ipod playlist: mafia - lloyd parks, concrete jungle - big youth home in zion - phillip parkinson the stopper - cutty ranks i ain't no joke - eric b & rakim the party scene - russel brothers bassline- mantronix al-naafiysh (the soul) - hashim white lines (don't don't do it) - grandmaster melle mel planet rock - afrika bambaata & the soul sonic force walking on sunshine - rockers revenge poppa large - ultramagnetic mc's open field attack - tuff crew strong island (vocal) - j.v.c. f.o.r.c.e. okay bye - fats comet and the big sound holiday as brutality - chris clark telephasis workshop - the boards of canada foil - autechre desire - depth charge xon (slight return) - octagon man night drive (time, space, transmat) - model 500 emerging technology (remix) - dmx crew re q - binaural trespasser - radioactive man proton - ed rush and optical sense 2 - sync 24 league - the wee djs fz-revisited - fzv series.e. - fold battle stations (original) - espion master model - boris divider riptide - decal we were robbed (of our ... religion, culture & god) - rum & black whats my mission now? (12" version) - tackhead dexx - michael forshaw l.f.o. - lfo flow coma - 808 state bounce your body to the box - (original detroit mix) - kevin saunderson substance abuse - f.u.s.e. neue sexualogane - dj controlled weirdness, christoph fringeli and rachael kozak goo goo muck - the cramps he's waitin'- the sonics p.i.l - p.i.l pretty vacant - sex pistols i'm sick of you - iggy pop i'm so bored with the u.s.a. - the clash the list make me want to be a total hypocrite & buy a nano |

I call iPods "the cone of silence".
No mater how many times you say "HI", "behind you" , "look out for the rattlesnake", they just walk along oblivous to everything. Then they jump all surprised as you pass them. I like hearing eveything on the trail. Mainly wonderful, lovely silence. Which is a very rare thing living in SoCal. |

I never ride with an iPod, but pre-(gnar)ride tunes would be along the lines of: Slayer, Dodheimsgard, Portal, or maybe White Zombie and NIN.

Before I tell you I am putting a disclaimer in:
I only wear an Ipod when I am alone and only one ear turned down so I can still hear the birds chirping. ![]() But I like the chrystal method or very old school manchester rap band stero mc's. They get me in a cool groove. |
