Default Heads Up at Oneill - Kitty cat sighting

Saw a 80-100lb mountain lion today on Monastery Rd. in Oneill Park.

I got within about 30' before she moved off the road. She went about 15' into the brush then turned around to watch me go by. I've seen cats in the wild numerous times and they usually can't get out of your way fast enough. This one didn't run and actually seemed to be considering holding her ground.

She appeared to be hunting something off the side of the road when I interupted her. I didn't see her ribs so she appeared fed, but she was hunting in the middle of the day so she must have been hungry.

Just a heads up. I haven't been seeing a lot of deer out there since the fires so there might be some hungry kitties out there.

Are you sure it was a Mountain Lion? (tail or no tail) A high precentage of sightings are usually Bob cats.

We saw some big single prints both Saturday and Sunday. No idea what they were, but I'm guessing not of the dog family!

Saturday was on a fire road just above some grapefruit orchards east of Hemet. Single row of paw prints going along the fire road for a bit, and they were fresh. A deer jolted across the fire road ahead of us, so I wasn't super worried, but Justin didn't get out of eye sight.

Sunday we saw some BIG prints at Daley Ranch. I've seen a bobcat out there, so it could've been that, but i'm sure there are lions there also.

Default Well fed feline....

JamR said the weaker deer are trying to get out of Whiting (general area) and getting picked off by cars near Cook's (two just last week), so if there's an absence of deer in O'Neill I sincerely hope that cat has been taking care of the rabbit overpopulation.

The smith & wesson Model 337, "AirLite Ti" in .38 special will provide the knock down power you need to take down a mountain lion without much of a weight penalty that you normally get when riding with most fire arms. Comes in a feather light 11.2 ounces. Compact enough to fit in your camelbak nicely.

Youll never get a chance to shoot it with a .38 or anything like that if your tracking it. Liek I said in my other posts the vast majority of big cats are scared to death of people its only the sick or starving that attck humans on purpose. And refering to the gun they attack form the side or behind and youll be down before you have a chance to shoot your self in the foot.

That's true, they normally go for the quick kill by sneaking up on you and biting you in the neck, thus severing your spinal cord and rendering you paralyzed so they can feast on you without putting up too much of a fight. You could try wearing something like this.

If they can't bite your neck, it's really hard for them to kill you. Plus it has sense of fashionable punk rock style.

Read what Eric said. Bobcats don't come in the 80-100lb category.

If Eric said he saw a mountain lion, he did.

a bob cat looks like a big house cat with funny ears and no tail and lion looks like well a lion its hard to mix the two up unless your screaming running now lion cubs and bob cats can get confusing sometimes

It seems that the lions are out more lately. Mtbr has lots of posts with sightings. Maybe to do with the fires? I remember that the mtn lion that killed one biker and attacked another in OC seemed to be the January that followed the last round of big fires (cedar fire?).

I agree that if you are attacked by a mtn lion, getting a shot off would be difficult at best. I think the best solution is to not ride alone. I've read that gluing "eyes" from a large stuffed animal to the back of your helmet might fool the mtn lion since they like to attack from behind (though I have no idea if it actually would work).

Ignoring the practicality and legalities of carrying while biking on most trails around here, I would be concerned that .38 out of such a short barrel would generate enough velocity to put a lion down unless you had really good shot placement. I've read some accounts of pitbull attacks where officers were forced to shoot the dog to stop the attack. Some have taken amazing amounts of firepower before they went down. 12 guage 00-buck would be my minimum choice for mtn lion defense... problem is carrying that on a bike would be unwieldy.

Speaking of mistaken identities, there was a case shortly after the OC mtn lion attack where a Redlands deputy shot a house cat that he mistook for a mtn lion. That had to be a really big house cat or he was looking thru a scope and he didn't realize the level of magnification.... http://forums.realpolice.net/archive...hp?t-9137.html

this assuming you get a chance to use it. I carry a 5" divers knife attached to the front of my camlebak. I dont think it will save me but it might even things up a bit.
