Default Giant trance x 2 vs reign 1.0

Ok still out on a bike to purchase but I really have it down to these two now for sure, really I do. The shop I have been dealing with has the price about 400.00 to 500.00 of each other. The reign is a six inch travel bike the trance x is a five inch, I guess my point is I would rather spend the extra money now and have a bike I wont out grow then to have to spend more money later on another bike. Tell me what would you do?

Default Hmm

Ride each bike and get what feels right.
Research MTBR. Make sure they have customer service.
If the bike has any problems you will need to know you can get it handled

thats what i said then i got hooked on bikes, and it was all down hill from there. the reign is going to be hevier, I ran into a guy named dave today on the loop that had the brand new 08 trance x he said he liked because of the more cross country design, but was still agressive on the down hills. It all depends on the riding you mainly want to do if you wanna do jumps drops and some agressive trail riding i would go with the reign, If climbing is a little more your taste go for the trance x.

I think he said his trance weighed in around 27 of 26 lbs
happy trails!

the trance advanced is very sexy too pricey though.

chumba xcl is a very nice 5" as well

out of the two, the reign has a better build kit on it with the nicer cranks, fork, shock.. if you can afford it, its a great bike that will definately improve your riding. The great thing about the 08's is the reduced weight of the frame, that R1 should be around 29-30 lb which is pretty damn good for a 6" bike. the TX2 is also a sweet bike that i would seriously look into depending on the trails you ride. its a solid 5" bike that will be about a lb. lighter than the R1, with the potential to be 25-26lb if you are a weight weenie with it.

Both can do all of what you describe.
Which are you least willing to compromise on: Climbing or descending?

That my friend is the million dollar question Since I havent been out in the local trails in your opinion which would be better? I am about 5'11 190 lbs if that really makes a differance. The shop told me that the trance x would do the job unless I really want to get a little crazy and do bigger jumps and stuff. Then again they dont have a lrg in stock to try only a med.

I'd go with the Trance. I just got rid of a 2005 Reign, and I think it was too much for XC, and not enough for DH. It was really twitchy, and it had a tendency to steer itself off the trail. It was great on the downhill, technical stuff, but it rode like sh!t on steep climbs and flats. Just my $.02.

Thanks for the feed back, the new 08 reign is the same frame as the trance x, just a beefier rear chasis and one inch more travel. What do you ride? I am wondering if it would be better to buy a frame and build a bike> or maybe I'm over thinking this whole bike thing lol

I switched to a Chumba XCL, with 5". I think it has pretty similar geometry to the Trance X, and it has most of the benefits of my Reign, without the downside. If you do any sort of climbing, you won't regret the Trance.

What exactly is your price range?

I'm with EC on this, especially if you're somewhat new to the sport. The Trance is a great all-around bike and a great value. Chumba's are sweet, but unless you know enough to do some very savvy buying & building, you'd be hard pressed to match the price point you can hit with the Trance.

The exception would be if you really expect to do some serious drops/jumps. The Trance should easily manage the rock gardens, etc., that you'll see on most local trails, but if you're planning on spending most weekends at Whistler, or doing urban 5' drops to flat, then go beefier. If that's the case, the extra cost of the Reign or the Chumba would pay for itself down the line.

Not to confuse the case, but you might also look at Kona as a solid bike and a good value, especially since two dealers who support STR (Path & Jenson) have good sales happening the next couple wekends.

I really wanted to spend no more than two thousand dollars give or take. I was at the path this weekend and rode a dawg supreme nice bike but three grand I guess I should stay with the Trance x 2 or stumpy comp and see if I even will stay with the sport then maybe go on to something else in a couple years when I know what the hell im doing lol. Alot has to do with the look of the frame to me and the Giant at first glance was not looking good but I think it is starting to grow on me

The Giants are a great bargain, and the frames have lifetime warranties. I'd be riding an X1 right now, had I not run into some $$ while I was looking for a bike. IMO, if you want something to hit the stuff Waldo was talking about (big flat drops, Whistler) your better off having a second "big" bike, or renting one when you go to those places; don't get a 6"+ bike for your everyday riding. I can't tell you how much nicer my XCL is to ride around than that Reign.

Trance X2 vs Dawg Supreme is not a fair comparison: That version of the Kona is spec'd way better than the X2.

Closer comparisons would be Trance XO vs Dawg Supreme, or Trance X2 vs Dawg Deluxe. I'm basing that on the 2007 Kona's - which should be getting discounted nicely around this time of year. I'm pretty sure The Path has them marked down already.

Not trying to change your mind - just presenting options. The Trance is a solid choice, and you can't go wrong with any of the bikes mentioned so far. Make sure it fits, and that you've got a good dealer close by that will stand behind the sale, then hit the trails!

You can get into a Santa Cruz Heckler for around $2000. Burly frame, can be built up as light as 28 lbs. and as heavy as you are willing to go. 5.5" of travel.

Plus they tend to hold thier value, so if you decide that this sport isn't for you, you're not totally screwed.

IF you were talking with her, then you gave her a better idea of what you are looking for.

You can do the R AM Kit with RS Revelation 426 for $2199. Weight will be around 32 lbs with pedals.

Here is the build kit: R AM Kit

The $2800 price she quoted was for a much nicer build package.
