I think another choice price wise is a KHS 605. 1500$ and a solid bike.

You can do the R AM Kit with RS Revelation 426 for $2199. Weight will be around 32 lbs with pedals.

Here is the build kit: R AM Kit

The $2800 price she quoted was for a much nicer build package.

Actually all I said was Fox front shock, I am really so new to this that I really have no idea what all the tech parts mean and another guy was helping me and he is the one who asked her about a Heckler build. I guess if I could get the Heckler speced like the Trance x2 that may be of help. Thanks for the help

If your looking to save money, maybe try buying a 07 instead of an 08, there is alot of money to be saved that way. You could get a top of the line bike instead of the entry level model for alot less. For example a Reign 1 instead of a Reign 3.

Parts for parts, both bikes seem to be pretty close. I would not short change the Revelation 426......it has been a reliable and solid for the the last few years. Then again, I am not a big fan of the Fox's base shocks, ie: R & RL models.

Asking for a Fox fork is kind of like walking into a car dealer and saying "I want something with 4 wheels." No offense intended - just that there are a lot of different models available. You're talking about a big chunk of change here, so it'll pay to take your time and choose well.

That R AM build for the Heckler is pretty solid - good stuff that'll last, just not the lightest possible, but that would cost $$$. The old cliche about bikes: "There's light, cheap, and strong - which two do you want?"

If you know someone who's into it and knows their components, take them along and compare notes with what the shop folks are telling you. If not, ask here, check the reviews on MTBR.com, and read the magazine reviews. And of course, demo, demo, demo - preferably on real trails.

For a bike with 6" of travel, it actually climbs really well. The Heckler is one of the most veratile bikes around.....XC light to DH heavy, and anywhere in between.

I bought a 2007 Trance 1 in Aug this year when the 2008s came out from Bicycle Warehouse in Temecula. This is the time to buy 2007s. My budget was $2k as well. It was marked down from $2400 to $1800 so with tax and some other stuff I got out for $2k. It has 4.2 inches of travel vs. the new 2008s with 5 inches but I got way better components (sram x9, Race Face and Rock Shox REBA) than the similar priced 2008. While it doesn't have the same travel it does climb very well and I have had no issues riding technical downhill stuff. I just got back from N. Cal over the weekend and rode plenty of technical stuff with drops no problem. The 2007 is a bit heavier but with better components and better price I have been really happy.

If you want a no-compromise trail bike, go with the Trance. If you're going to do a lot of your riding on lift assisted trails, go with the Reign.

I agonized over the same question between an 05' Trance 1 and and '05 Reign 1. Back then the 1 line was the 0 line. The travel on the Trance is not quite as bottomless or plush as it is on the Reign, but it is VERY efficient. My trance "only" has 4.2 inches of travel, but I don't have any problems keeping up with 5 and 6 inch bikes on the downhills. A 5 inch Trance would border on luxurious.

Don't get me wrong, the Reign is a fantastic bike, and is really perfect on lift assisted trails (think Snow Summit and Mammoth). But, it is a bit of a drag on climbs, and is NOT a big hit bike.

It's interesting to me that Evil Chocula complained that the Reign is twitchy. I though the same of the Trance when I first got it. Now I think of it as responsive.

Good luck! Hope to see you on the trails with your new Giant.

Not to confuse you anymore but it all comes down to quality of components, and you can get them used or new. You don't need a 7000$ S- works. Any bike in the 30 lbs range (new) around 1500-2000$ price range will be a good bike. You really have to ride to know what you want. Ride with a group and trade bikes If people a willing to part with their steed for a short period of time. Good luck, I think you we be happy just riding!!!

Wow, the Reign pedals just as well as my Ironhorse Hollowpoint with 1.5" more travel. How did you guys have the Reign set up? Did it bob? Was it the weight?

Im in the exact boat as you are and Im leaning towards the Trance X, as Nam stated the R1 does come with a better build, but the other thing is the TX you can buy a frame set for and really build it up super nice...I think it does come down to what you ride and how you ride. Take lynx at Aliso, if youre the type to huck that rock at the end get the reign(not cuz the extra inch is perfect for it, its just you would be a more aggressive rider), but if you take the safer way then get the trance..Im no hucker so I'm leaning Trance, ALTHOUGH you may want to check out the new 08 spesh they look to be pretty nice bikes too. Im waiting till spring of next year to see how everything rides in reviews and word of mouth etc.

MK3 would be a sweet bike, both this and the 6point will be a heavier bike it that matters to you.

nope, i just like dual linkage bikes like maestro and dw... haven't had much time on a vpp bike so i cannot say whether or not i like it, but from talking to Justin (mechmann) it seems that VPP has more pedal feedback.
