Default Airlift at the B's

Just got back from a B's ride... We were held up when someone was being airlifted from the chutes. I didn't see the guys face, but just hope it wasn't one of our own. The Pilot said it looked like he just broke his ribs.

Be careful out there.

Bummer. Whoever it was, I hope he or she isn't too severely hurt and is very well insured.

Broken ribs from what I heard.

An important lesson could be learned from this one though. I was out on Fire Watch this morning in weir and actually saw the guy sitting on the side of the trail across the canyon, and from that far away it just looked like he was fixing his bike or taking a rest.

Then I saw the OCFA Chopper heading out past Weir into Fremont canyon, and a few minutes later I received a call from dispatch that they were looking for an injured biker in Fremont.

I put two and two together and told them that I think their information was incorrect and it was probably the rider I was watching in Santiago Oaks on the Barham Ridge trail.

Moral of the story.......we should always know the name of the area we are riding and the name of the trail we're on. The fire dept knows the areas and the trails by name. He could have been receiving medical aid probably 15 minutes sooner if they were not looking for him up in Fremont. In case of a more serious injury....15 minutes could potentially be the difference between life and death.

Stay safe out there.

Yea, they only airlifted them a whole qtr of a mile over to Irvine Park where they put him into an Ambulance. Not to mention, they had a yamaha rhino up there already.

Its funny, my camera was laying there on the seat and I said to myself, I won't need it. Could of had some cool video of the chopper landing and taking off.

Yea, but you never know. He could have done something else as well.

I remember way back in the day, say 12 years ago (ie: didn't have one of those brick cells phones with me), when the b's were a true singletrack. I broke my arm on the chutes. Back then they were pretty hairy in some places, not to mention the sweet rides we had back then didn't soak up the stuf to well. Anyway, I had to walk out. It was drizzling the whole way untill I ate it. Then it started pooring. By the time we got down to the wash, the water was waste deep and full of debris. Try having a broken arm, and walking/swimming/dragging a bike with a tacoed wheel through a waste deep nasty muddy river. I almost said eff it, let me drown. To this day I have never seen that much rain water down that wash. All I can remember is ouch that hurt. I did manage to laugh a few times after we made the swim with the bikes through the Rio Grande. By the time I got the car, my arm and hand was black and yellow, not purple... it was black. It freaked me out so I told my buddy to floor it to the hospital. The a-hole took me home instead knowing my mom worked for the hospital.

I wish I had a helocopter ride that day.

True. About 5 years ago I broke my collar bone and separated my shoulder coming down chutes. It was a long ride home but I made it. I live in Tustin so it wasn't bad.

I was thinking the same thing. Damn, I dislocated and broke my shoulder and had to walk out. Although, that's only because no one else was around. Would have appreciated some big strapping guys to carry me out...

Actually it's a Bell UH-1B often refered to as a "Huey"
It holds seven passengers. The 214 and 216 are Jet Rangers and are often used by television stations for traffic reporting and fires etc. The Jet Rangers are slimmer in design and hold 4 or 6 passengers.

Sorry to highjack thread.

Sorry Shu! You were correct, the military model designation for the newer "Huey" is a 214, my bad.

Chutes has changed and like I said the other day be careful even if you know it like the back of your hand. I can't describe just how it is different other than maybe a fire truck followed by 1000 horses just ripped though it and smashed everything I used to use as traction. You might not recognize the trails.

Maybe I am going crazy. See for your self.
