Default Is it a Thanksgiving thing? No is a people thing.

We had a great ride today and some STR people showed up: DirtCrab, Endo Verendo, ReignMan and ChipandSalsa. I never met any of them before. I invited some friends also and they brought more people also so it turned to be a larger group than planned. To make a long story short during the ride there was proof that the people on this sport is what makes it special: first I found a nice Razor phone at the start of the ride, later I found the owner part of the group riding ahead of us and returned it. There was some minor mechanicals that Endo Verendo help my friends to fix just because he is nice. My other friend ruined his rear tire beyond repair at the fardest point of the ride and was going to wait for me to get my car, that meant over an hour wait plus the drive time to where he was. Then he called me to let me know that someone, a complete stranger but fellow mtnbiker offered him a ride so he wouldn't had to wait for over an hour for me. That's why I say is the kind of people attracted to this sport that makes it special.

of all the hobbies that i've been involved in, none is as close and as helpful as the mountain biking group.

And why I don't surf anymore. It's always you vs. everyone else. MTBing is different. Where in the surfing world would you find a site like STR? People wanting to meet up and paddle several miles to catch a couple of waves. Don't think it would happen.

Many years ago it did. In the 60's we used to welcome guys from the LA beaches and they'd welcome us. We didn't get a lot of guys up from SD in those days. The locals only bullshit didn't really start till the 70's.

I coulnt agree with you more , you meet the nicest people on the trail . All the newbys I take trip out on that , we will be riding along & come across some one pulled over on the side of the trail who needs help , maybe air or a tube i stop & help . when we ride away I tell them thats what we do , Its part of being a mountain biker . Period . Thats what makes it special

been on a board since the early 90's. Surfers have the worst tudes

As sports get bigger so do the ego's. Over the past 18 years I have really seen b-biking change.......change for the worst.

However IMO it is still the best sport

A few weeks ago, our group had stopped at a rest point (mid-way down El Prieto). A XC racer stops and asked if anyone had LOST A WALLET! After some checking, JeffJ had indeed lost his wallet. He was leaving for TEXAS the next day. Not having a wallet would have ruined his vacation.

Looking back, I think to myself how many times I (we) have offered trail side help (i.e. a tube, a tire change, derailler adjustments, Powerlink, water, food, zip ties etc.). Never really thought about how much it COST ME in time or money! I CAN (to this day) remember the how good it felt to HELP a Brother in need!
