I used to be a loyal member of MTBR until I came here and tonight I know why I left. I took one little trip over there and the first thing I see is a post bashing one of their own, complete with accusations from planting booby traps to being a creepy old man. The person in question must be beyond mortified and I cannot even imagine being in this person's place. Everyone on this site called this person friend at one point. There is no basis or proof for any of these accusations and the post is reminiscent of a witch hunt. Any moderator worth his or her salt would have pulled this thread in a heartbeat.
I am beyond disgusted and will not make the mistake of visiting that forum again. I only post this to highlight what we have here and to make sure we protect it from ever becoming what is going on over there. Mott |

MTBR sucks. Everytime I ask a question about something- there is usualy nothing on topic. Other than die hard fans of their own bikes bashing everything else.
I still check up on there though because I have no life.Although coming here for questions about a bike for Freeride is a little difficult because there doesn't seem to be many here that actually do. One thing is for sure, everyone here is helpful. It's only once in a blue moon when I get someone on MTBR that really wants to help as opposed to forcing an opinion. And there actually seems to be only a handful of helpful people on there.

Kind of a shame.Years ago, I met a lot of cool people and riders there. But even then it was a hit & miss type of thing weather you'd get a ration of shiat for asking a perfectly legitimate question. I've watched mountain bike sites and a few others go this way and I always wonder why the mods don't step in. MTBR went the way a lot of sites go and that's chasing the almighty dollar.

On the edge of chaos

It happends to all sites as they grow, sort of a Bell curve thing. Finally the topics expand until someone's sore point is hit, like Can O Worms.
Anyway I find the Norcal board a popular and friendly place. I've checked and seen more people on Norcal than Passion. |

I totally agree and good for you! The thing I like here is that there is no segregation and isolation. I think originally the intent was good making all the different boards but rather then serving a positive productive purpose, it turned into groupies and gangs (Turner vs. Ellsworth. SS vs. gears. DH vs. XC, etc.). I believe with sensible liberal moderation and avoiding the same pit falls as MTBR, all will continue to be well. A similar thing happened to Socalmtb.com and it's a shame. I personally know Steve Carrey (the creator, webmaster and owner of the board). He's a great guy and paved the way for a lot of these boards and that includes this one. His downfall was he wasn't active in the community and did this for the love of the outdoors, not even for riding as he's hardly ever ridden. He's an old school pocket protector wearing IBM Mainframe and Mini Tech. Brilliant guy, just busy with a million other things. He never made a red cent off the board. In fact, it costed more then it revenued but he continued to provide a service and hence built a small loyal community. Like any business though, if you're not hands on and expect other people to look out after your best interest and investment, more times then not, it's not going to happen. Happy Turkey Day! ![]()

I still check MTBR from time to time to keep tabs on the racing scene; endurance & XC-racing forums. The former is more friendly as most of those people know each other but that's not the case for the latter.
I prefer STR because it's harder to hide behind a screen name and post alot of BS as there's probably only two degrees of separation between any two riders here. I think the Can O Worms post would have degenerated into a useless thread very quickly if it was posted on MTBR. Here on STR, people who feel strongly about an issue can voice their opinions and construct a much more informative dialog or at least something worth reading. Thanks for a great site and all the effort George! |

Or Not Enough

I visit over there when STR gets slow, but it gets old pretty quickly, what with all the aggressive posturing and e-badassery and the guy who always recommends buying an Ibex and all that other stuff. It's still good for information sometimes because the user base is so big.

Live Free, Ride Hard

For like a week and I can already see the difference in forums. I do, however, run into some good conversations over there and I enjoy checking out pics of peoples bikes from all over the country, especially bikes that are the same as mine. I'm involved in a nice little discussion on the resurgence of the HT over there right now in the Frames threads. But I agree that overall it gets a bit old. I like STR because it's mostly conversations about places that are less than an hour away. Very cool stuff, keep up the great work here guys.
