Default Best Hitch for a Suby/WRX Wagon

Thanks to a board member, I picked up my RimRoc rack a while back. I'm just about done with this wrist business and wanted to get the hitch for my car so I could start using the rack/get out to the dirt.

So since there are a couple of guys/gals here that run Subies, what hitch are you using? I know Drawtite's has a full length tube, where some mfgs use flat stock above the muffler. When I switch the muffler out, It's going to be to a Cobb unit, so if anyhting it's smaller than the factory unit. That being said, I was thinking that a hitch that runs a full tube all the way accross sould have a little less torsional flex. I've got a Uhaul just down the street and will see if they have one in stock cause I had one of theirs on my old Tahoe without any problems. But if anyone else has any brand suggestions, or retail locations in the South Bay/Long Beach areas, let me know.

Thanks,
Chris

I've got a WRX wagon too. I love my car. A friend of mine has a pretty sweet Hollywood Sport Rider rack on his RS. The rack is pretty sturdy and has clearance even though his car is dropped a bit. If I get one I'm going with the Hollywood.

My buddy is running an STI stock exhaust on his RS. No clearance issues. I'll snap a pic of his hitch setup next time I see him. The Cobb doesn't take up more space than a stock unit, does it?

Dan has a Suby WRX (2004). We use the T2 Hitch rack, but ya know, now that I'm typing this, I don't know what the actual hitch is. He got it from San Diego Trialer Supply, not the dealer.

Edit: I went outside and looked the the hitch says "Datan" or "Datlan".

The T2 is the easiest and safest rack I think I have ever used..

I'm good on the rack side of things, but I can use any further input on the hitches folks are using on their subies. And yeah, the Cobb unit is smaller than the OEM muffler, so as long as whatever is out there doesn't interfere with the stocker, it should work with the Cobb.

Thanks,
Chris

I drive a Sti with stock muffler and use a drawtite hitch. I believe this is the lightest of the options out there. The Cobb should be smaller than stock. If there is any rubbing problems, you can always get some longer Kartboy hangers. Good luck.

I just put a 1 1/4" Hidden Hitch receiver on my Toyota Matrix yesterday. It fits perfectly and holds my Yakima rack nicely. Not the exact same car, but the Hidden Hitch is nice.

begin thread derail:

wow- lots of WRX owners here! 03' sonic yellow waggon here.

end derail....possibly.

on topic- why a hitch rack? just curious- I've managed to get 4 bikes on top of my WRX, but they were XC style bikes, FWIW. that and I'd rather have the toys on top instead of on the back where they can become a bike sandwich with another car...

Spookydave,

I got the tools covered brah, but if my cousin finds out about what you did to his car he's gonna $hit, I mean he's really gonna $hit I think the Spectra's trailer probably exceeds the Suby's towing capacity.

Slow SSer, I actually had a roof setup before. It was alright, but I instantly noticed worse milage with just the racks up there. That's to say nothing about mileage with bikes in the rack. I don't mind em being out back as their covered under my home insurance policy, so the worst case scenario is that I'd have to build a new rig for my $500 deductible The other problem was that my brother's bike wouldn't fit in the roof rack, which sucks cause his truck drinks a lot more gas than the Suby. After using Spookydave's rimrock rack, I was sold and wanted to get one.

As for the Suby, it's a silver 05 WRX wagon. 55k, so only 5k more until I'm out of warranty and parts start getting swapped. Nothing crazy, just a Cobb turbo back, AccessPort v.2, gutted up-pipe and when the stock dampeners go, some inserts and pro-drive springs.

Hopefully I'll be able to get free this weekend to look at some different hitches.

Nice! I've got an 04 wagon, Silver, Scoobysport catless, Prodrive Oval, Prodrive GC-06, Prodrive springs, Swaybars, and sedan front end conversion paid for by insurance after some brodozer ran over my front end and drove off on Labour Day.
