Default New Single Speed Frame Suggestions

OK, so I lost my SS at Maple Springs. Time to get a new one.

I'm thinking of either getting another KHS Solo One or a Kona A Full Suspension. The Kona is a SS frame w/ 3 inches of rear travel, the KHS has only 1 inch of rear travel. The KHS is cheaper and probably lighter.

Any suggestions on frames?

I recently saw a sweet Bianachi SS frame/build at a shop in San Clemente. Don't know details, but it was love at first sight!

A ZION brand frame is inexpensive and made of Renoylds 853 steel. They can be had with an EBB or vert dropouts. They are at Jenson for $399 or $425 with EBB. *I almost went with this but the Access aluminun fit my budget.

I had 3 KHS bikes , well, I actually bought a COMP ST about 4 years ago. It's the soft tail like the Solo one but with a steel frame. After 2 years, the frame broke at the chainstay. KHS have a lifetime warranty. They not only replaced it but they upgraded me to the Team ST which is the top of the soft tail line (Same frame as the Solo One), it's an Alu frame, very light and stiff. But there was a weekness in a weld near the seatpost and a crack appeared after 2 months. KHS replaced it again without any problems. I loved the bike but it was not strong enough for my type of riding (look at my signing name), so I sold it and got the Kona.

I often miss it, specially on long climbs.

I attached a picture of the Team ST

I rode a geared Team ST for a couple of years. The all steel version.
I miss it as well. A strong lively ride and a great climber.
I am a Clyde and it held up well for me.
It built up to around 25-26 pounds with mostly XT bits.

I'm in the long range market for a SS frame too. So far I've been researching the Surly 1x1 or On One Inbred. I took a look at the Kona Unit too. My cousin loves his On One. I'm going the full rigid route, me thinks.

At the Castaic Lake race this year, in the expert ss category, there were 10 racers and guess what..... 8 out of 10 raced on 29" bikes.
If you're going ridgid go 29er.
Haro- Mary
Zion
Red Line- monocog
Bodoo
If you have a budget if not, the custom made frame's list could get big

The Bianchi Lewis is sweet looking! I had to show great restraint when I saw it at the shop. I was very close to buying it... On the other hand, I still love my converted 1999 Cannondale CAAD 3.

Bianchi also has a nice 29ner, but not as good looking as the Lewis.

This is hilarious. I believe this goes back to that crazy day when Adam and a few other guys got stuck in a flash flood on Maple Springs. The infamous the water is really high so let me chuck my bike across the water crossing....

Yes, this is a really old thread. Weird.

I love my Niner ONE9 rigid.
29", single speed. The total build weighs under 21 lbs.

As Chocula pointed out, how incredibly random. Talk about a stroll down Memory Lane...

Nice forensic work there, Carl! Feels much longer ago than it actually was. I sometimes forget the same storm claimed the young girl in Silverado. I'm always reminded as I drive past, though.

Not to get this ancient thread back on track or anything, but hey, looks like there's a decent SS for sale.

Hey, Alan, still in the market?

yea, that was a crazy experience i will never forget ... i couldn't believe how fast the water was rising ... after it was over, I was thankful nobody got hurt and we just lost bikes, but it was sad to hear about the little girl who passed away...

i've since replaced that ss with another one, but now, chumba is coming out with our own steel SS 29er, we already have prototypes of it at the shop, i will be building up one of those for myself....Dell, let me know if you want to try it out..

A.

What's the frame, j? I'm actually in the SS market, but want to lighten up my AM bike for the VQ, too. I'm so torn...
