I've never shipped a bike myself, but I used to work at The UPS Store where several of our customers shipped bikes.
The biggest peice of advice I can give if you go UPS Store is to have it boxed before (box yourself or have a bike shop help), because the UPS Store will charge you way too much and they probably won't pack it right anyway. |

Have you ever been sitting in a plane, watching the baggage handlers toss bags out of the belly of the plane onto the tarmac? That's what they'll do to your bike.
Have you ever seen the big U.S. Postal Service "dump trucks" that tilt up, sending all the packages tumbling over each other and onto a conveyor belt? That's what they'll do to your bike. Since your package will be larger than most, expect it to be on the bottom of hte pile with everything else stacked on top of it as the truck bounces along the road. If you package your bike to withstand that kind of abuse, you'll be fine. I would seriously consider a hard case that is made just for that purpose. |

i have shipped a frame and more recently my kona coiler (to an APO) that sucked! i had to put the wheels in a seperate box from the frame and fork (via USPS). i bubble wrapped the heck out of the frame and fork and placed cardboard reinforcements to try to protect the headset/headtube area. george helped me tape the crank arms in place to the chain stays with packing tape. it ended up costing ALOT of money to ship it to an APO since it is 'oversized'. i will never ship to an APO again, trying to estimate the cost, then having to tell the buyer it was more than anticipated sucked a$$. luckily he was cool though and understood.
when i shipped my 03 enduro frame, i used a bike box, but cut it down, bubble wrapped the heck out of the frame and also used some cardboard reinforcements. i shipped it via FEDEX ground to florida for only $13.50, i sh!t you not!

I shipped a bike to PA via UPS in August. I packed it myself. You could have run that box over with a truck and that bike would have been fine. It cost me $27 and some change.
I'm not positive, but I think JensonUSA will professionally box and ship the bike via UPS for you. You might want to call and make sure first.

I bought my bike online (Ibex) and they shipped it from Georgia to California for $35 via FedEx ground. It was packed in a cardboard bike box with the front wheel, handlebars, and saddle removed and wrapped up in the same box.
Are you selling a bike or are you moving?

I have shipped about 10 bikes this year. UPS raised their rates on shipping bike size boxes and are way more expensive than Fed Ex. For sure go to Fed Ex.
Use lots of wrap and cardboard. Most common problems Ive seen from bikes Ive bought is bent rotors (remove them), and wheels scratching/ denting the down tube. Have fun. |
