Default Single Speed tensioner(?) set up

I was wondering what tensioner you SS riders are using. I am using a Forte $20 cheapy but removed the spring set up and put it on the out side of the mount so it will "push up" the chain giving the most wrap around of chain on the cog. It also tucks it into the chain stay for better heel clearence. It works great and is alot cheaper than something like a Soulcraft.

I use a Surly tensioner, but run it over because the chain hits the stay if I route it under the chain. I'm running 34/18 in case you're wondering.

Gene: I've heard that the surly tensioner in push up mode works better- that is, if you've had any issues...

to the OP- what wheels are those? interesting spokes...I'm thinking of SSing my roadie for commuting and you might have just pushed me a little closer to that decision...

Those are old Giant wheels from the late 80's, early 90's. Riding them is like draging a sand bag off the back of your bike; they look great but weigh more then twice the weight of a good set of wheels! I commute on a fixed gear and ride this during the week (the bike pictured), I'm running a 39x12, most use a 13, which is better. I had this bike sitting around and its not worth selling so I made it into a SS. I say "do it" and make your commuter into a SS.

Ya Ethan, ever since I changed from the 32/20 to what I have have now 34/18, I can't get the chain length right, even with half links so I can eliminate the tensioner or route it "under/pushing up" without the tensioner hitting the chain stay. That chain stay is pretty thick, it's Giant XTC.

That ring did look really small. Man, that's pshing some power! Very inspiring indeed.

Wow, Gene, you and I run the same setup Cool

I run it over too because I've had issues with the chain dumping off...even tried taking a full link out and putting in a half-link.

Amon,
Can you post a pic of the whole bike? From what little I can see, it looks like it could be a really sexy bike!

Ah...the joys of slotted dropouts.

I use the rennen on my dirtjumper and it works geat, i will never run one of those forte/pyramid/sette tensioners again, they are complete junk, it kept twisting into the spokes and bending the hanger and sending me over the bars.
