hey,
so it's been up in the air for a while but i'm booking my flight this weekend for january 4 - january 19ish. touchdown in san jose, costa rica. i've been looking at the whole multi-day bike tours they have from san jose to the volcano down to the pacific coast beaches but i'm not so sure i'm down with the guided tours. i'm leaning towards the idea of doing it all on my own and now in the process of mapping the route i'm going to take. if anyone has had experience riding costa rica please share you experiences and any advice. btw, this is a solo trip for me. i've always wanted to try travelling solo so this should be an interesting experience...unless of course any STRers are going to be there at the same time...then we should ride together.

If you want to ride from San Jose up Irazul that's Day 2 of La Ruta. You can find the route here.
http://www.geoladders.com/personal_r...ch_str=la+ruta Doing day 1 2007 in reverse will get you from outside San Jose to the Pacific. Avoid the day 1 2006 route...that was very very hard. I'm not sure if you can follow the actual route of day 1 because that goes through some of parks and I don't know if they're open all the time. I think you'll get ALOT of rain and ALOT of mud in Jan...that could be a good thing. |

I think Dec./ Jan. is the high season there. Of course, I'm not backing this up by actually looking but we were going to go there and I seem to remember we booked (then cancelled)for february and that was the dry season.
