Default Car insurance to cover a bike?

I haven't called my insurance company yet but has anyone heard of using car insurance to cover a bike if someone rear ends your car if you are using a trunk carrier?

Insurance covers property damage as well if it's the guy behind you at fault.
Comprehensive or non-insured motorist coverage however may not cover it if it isn't a permanent fixture on the car. This is if YOUR insurance has to pay for it.
I did have my comprehensive cover a roof rack that was torn off when the car went through a barb-wire fence. I'm not sure if it would have covered a bike that could have been on top. It may all depend how it was attached to the car.

If your car insurance won't, then most renters or home owners policies allow for coverage of single items. Our laptops, for example, are covered for $25/yr against anything, anywhere with full replacement cost.

i work for an insurance company, can you guess which one, and regarding your question.

If you get rear-ended and have the bike on a rack on the back then YES the other persons "Property Damage" cover will replace your bike and carrier.
I had a simialr case where one of our insureds rearended a plumbing truck and we had to pay to replace the pipes and toilets and toolsboxes that were damaged in the accident, fun times.

Now the home owners or renters insurance would cover the bike in other cases, say the bike was stolen from the rack, not the auto insurance.

According to my car insurance agent, if the accident is not your fault the other guy's insurance should cover it under property damage.

If the accident is your fault, then it's not covered. Your home owner's/renter's insurance would cover it then.
