Default Trail Maintenance Question

Although I've been riding for several years, I've never given much thought to trail maintenance until recently. With all the rain there must be a ton of work to do. Presumably, help will be needed so how do I volunteer?

My search of this site found the Fullerton Loop singletrack thread but no others. Are there organizations in place that take care of specific trails or do people just fix something when they see it? Not sure how it all works. Any insights would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Art

I think it depends on the trail. I ride primarily at aliso and I've seen flyers that ask for volunteers. If there is any ranger station or information place at a trail I would check there because they usually hire or organize the trail maintenence. If there is nothing like that you might wanna search the city/county websites and find the parks/recreations section.

Whatever you do, don't just take a shovel and tools and start working because you need clearance to work on trails.

There are other trail maintenance orgs, but call your local IMBA -affiliate and ask them what they've got going. As an alternative, go meet the Ranger for an area you ride in, and work with him or her to set up a volunteer day you just advertise here and at your local bike shop. As long as you plan out a task that's managable, it will work out.

And not to get soft or anything, but after you do trail work you might find yourself riding by the site and getting proud or something.

Default One for the San Diegans

And, for those of us in Too-Muddy-To-Ride San Diego, it's not too soft to repair rain erosion in Mission Trails:

Come on out Saturday the 26th and help repair some of the battering
Mission Trails has received from the record rains this year. Meet at
the corner of Colina Dorada/Calle de Vida (Thomas Bros. Page 1230 B2)
at 8:30 a.m. It will be another sunny day in the park and the dirt
will be easy to work. You might even want to ride to the work site.
Contact Everett at everett@sdmba.com for more details.

Where at and what time is the USFS training? Probably a good idea since I have no experience.
