Some stolen bike stories end well. Surprised NY Times would even notice and bother covering it.

Great article. I will admit, when I was in junior high, some kid down the street stole my bike from my backyard. I later saw him that day riding MY bike and proceeded to issue him a proper azz whopping.

my old landlord in NYC was a total scuzz. my roommate and i were moving to a new apartment 5 blocks north and when i came back to get my old steel cruiser which was locked up next to the laundry room, it was gone. i asked the landlord and he told me he had no idea where it could have gone. remember, he was a total scuzz. about a month later i came back to help a friend move out of her apartment in the building next door and there was my frickin' bike locked up to the gate outside my old apartment building! my old key wouldn't work, because, of course, he'd had to cut off the old lock. i was so p!ssed! my bike was right there and i couldn't get it back! Well, downstairs of our apartment building were a couple of Irish fellas who rented the basement as a workspace. They saw me trying to take the bike and thought I was trying to steal it, so they came out to stop me. When I told them what had happened, they weren't surprised that the old landlord had done that. They dealt with him on a regular basis and new he was a real turd. They commented on my freckles and my reddish hair and I confirmed that yes indeed, i was an Irish gal, so they went down to their workspace, came up with a giant set of bolt cutters and removed the lock. And I cruised happily home...
