Things would be much simpler if you just got rid of the drivetrain, wheel, handle bar, and...oh hell why not...the frame while you're at it. Then you can really feel connected to the ground, or maybe not as this clip shows.

Actually, I ran into Erik (in the video) in Tunnels this afternoon w/ two friends when he needed an allen tool. He asked me where the "technical stuff" was since it was his first time in Tunnels. I pointed him to the west canyon exit climb but had no idea of what he was asking until tonight.

really, i am just jealous. i don't like SSing and only do it when forced to by my wife.
Well, I am a poser, but I've also had 7 broken wrists and riding without front suspension is just not an option for me. I watch these guys on fully rigid bikes and envy them.I tried it, and just can't, even the pain freak has his pain threshold.

I hear you Mike. I have jacked my right wrist up so many times, even a long rough ride on a sus fork can make my wrist sore. Rigid is not an option for me either. Sucks too, cuz Fetish makes a sweet carbon fork that matches my frame.

Default You can slice it and dice it..

anyway you want. SS'ing is fun because it is a different way of riding.

On a geared bike you shift down on the climbs and then speed-up on the flats

On a SS you attack the hills (ride faster) and rest on the flats.

Yea at first it is hard but then it get easyer.

Just pick the right gear ratio and basicly any one can do it.

I ride my SS on specific trails and my geared bike on others.

Try one and have fun!

I don't know what is so special about it, but I have taken by its charm. Just last week I posted that I wanted to buy a geared 29er for cheap. I was sure I wanted geared. I still wouldn't mind a geared 29er, but now I am considering a SS 29er instead.

What attracts me to it is that I want a different kind of challenge on my local trails that I feel I have mastered. Speeding through these trails for time is fun, but I need variety. I saw a guy SSing some of our local trails and it just looked like a different experience altogether. Plus, I think SS would level the playing field when I ride with my wife and let her see me in pain while climbing.

I think SS also offers just as much tinkering that some of us love, myself included. What gear ratio, etc becomes just as much of a game.

Anyone wanna sell me or loan me a cheap 29er SS to play with?

And since you're too modest to say it Jose, you are usually SSing up near the front of the pack on any ride. It doesn't look like it slows you down one bit.

How big a fella are you? No I am not looking for a date but you can spin my SS. Me 6'2"

One thing though……It takes more than one ride to “get SS’ing”. The first time I rode one I was coming off the VQ and thought I was in good shape.

After my first real climb my heart was pounding out of my chest and Jesus was calling me “into the light”.

Half way through the ride I was thinking “I am so stupid why did I waste my money on this”.

Then the next ride I started to learn how to ride it. By the third ride I was hooked.

The best advise I got was from a SS’er shop owner was “ If you are interested in it and think it would be fun…..you will love it.”

It sounds like you will dig it so go get one!

If you want get a frame that you can convert to a geared bike just to be on the safe side.

SS has taught me some very important skills:

1.) gaining momentum for a climb
2.) getting off the saddle

I found that these skills transferred over to my geared bike, which is great.

Not riding SS right now because I'm getting a new custom frame built - can't wait to get back to it!

This discussion has gotten WAY TOO philosophical. Lets just agree that they use 2 wheels and some people like em for whatever reason, to include wanting to look kewl at the trailhead cuz they have their swell new trendy 29er single speed....others dont like em cuz they suck ass at climbing on a geared bike.....and some like em for honest to goodness reasons that they will take to their grave

I just don't want this place to become mtbr, especially something as lame as the 29er forum. next thing u know people will be debating the merit of drop bars and 650B ghey wheels.

str is unique in that people walk the walk and tend not to get hung up on ghey esoteric debates which the answer to, if one exists that is, makes zero difference on the trail.

by the wau b!tch, u owe me a tour of san juan come december.

cheers

at all. The OP answered a legit question an there were "good" responses. It sounds like he may want one.

But I hear ya no need for the brand / riding style wars

"by the wau b!tch, u owe me a tour of san juan come december."

San Juan is for "out of town posers" and ghey. We will show you some real trails.

I'm probably like most SSers in that it's just another bike we have in the stable. I mostly ride XC so a SS was something I thought I would just utilize for training, but it quickly became my primary ride. When I ride long, technical trails then I'll bring out the geared full suspension bike.

Some guys have downhill bikes along with their freeride bikes and jump bike, I have a rigid SS 29er and a 26" full suspension geared bike and a SS cruiser. It just simply comes down to riding what you enjoy.

When done up right, a rigid, steel SS can = Sofulla Soul.
