Looking for feedback on which platforms folks seem to like. Been riding clipless for a while, but feel when hitting technical rocky sections or jumps a platform may give me a confidence boost. BTW although my older Shimano DX SPD platforms do provide add'l surface area when unclipped, found my feet can bounce around uncontrollably.

If you are bouncing around a lot and find your feet being seperated from the pedals a lot, I recommend the Speedplay Drillium. I've never ridden on a platfrom that felt so solid. The only downside is that they are wide as hell and they tear apart your shoes. I sure as hell haven't tried everything on the market but these have been by far the grippiest platform pedal I have ever ridden. I found it extremely difficult to get bounced or slip off of these things.

The best platforms I have ever had are Wellgo MG1's. They are very tough, reasonably priced, and super light. 376g a set.

I like the Kona's. Cheap , but man do they hold up. With the right pair of shoes you almost feel clipped in. I also like the Shimano XTR platforms, but the little spikes/screws keep coming out. I guess some locktite might fix it though.

Here is a list of the pedals I've tried and liked in order starting with the best:
http://www.syncros.com/pedals.htm Mental Pedal Magnesium http://www.transitionbikes.com/2007/...s_Stepdown.cfm Transition Stepdown pedal http://www.crankbrothers.com/5050.php Crank Brothers 5050 pedal (like the threaded pins didn't like the shiny studs) You might check out some BMX stores since they would have greater selection of platforms. Dan's comp has a good selection: http://www.danscomp.com/products.php...TS&show=Pedals |

Currently, my DH bike has the latest Shimano DX pedals (the current models), my 4X bike has some no-name cheapos, my gf's bike has Sun/Ringle (that I used to ride DH with), and my BMX bike has old school Shimano DX - the original platforms. For the last 7 years, I've been using the same old pair of Vans (I just bought some 5-Tens, but I haven't used them yet).
Which ones are best? Well, I hate to say it, but they're all the same to me. I've never had a problem with my feet slipping off, nor do my feet bounce around. Maybe it's technique more than the pedals or shoes. Or maybe because I'm so fat that I'm glued to the pedals. In my opinion, get whatever you think looks best or at a price you want to pay. If you use them for DH, the outer pins will probably wear off on rocks (and ground to the point where replaceable pins won't go in).

The Shimano DX platforms are nice and light but not extremely tough. A little lock-tight when setting in the pins does the trick if they keep falling out. If you smack your pedals on rocks or something those pins will stay in with the lock-tight but they can get as sharp as surgical tools. |

I have these pedals combined with the 5.10 impact lows and its a great combination. The only way my feet come off is if I lift them off the pedals. The 5.10s are hard to find except online and even then i wasn't sure on the right size. I got mine at Garageworks in Irvine after reading a post on platforms vs. clips. I'd rather try my shoes on first before buying them.

fyi - 510 is out of many many sizes of impact two's ... i had to order the sam hill version of 510's ... they seem to have more of those available. they are more expensive and not really my thing, but a lot of people love them.

I really like the Easton's. They're pricey, but I have never lost any of the pins, and they're still going strong after two seasons on them. I believe that they've tagged every rock out at Southridge.

Sean--you should have asked me. As a proponent of platform pedals, I have tried lot's of them. I'm not claiming to be an expert, but I have used many different kinds.
As Allison said, no matter which pedals you go with, use them with 5.10 Impact shoes. By far the best shoe out there. My experience with platform pedals: Crank Bros 50/50--absolute junk. My feet slipped off constantly. By far the worst platform pedal I have ever owned. Wellgo MG1--works well, grips well. Doesn't hold up well to bashing around. Looks like crap after a few weeks. Not that looks are important, but they just looked like shite. The pins wore down fast on mine. Sun Ringle ZuZu--Worked OK. Pretty slippery after going through water though. Pins wore down very quickly. Azonic Fusion--Junk!! Cost around $30 and isn't worth half that. Bearings wore out quickly and pedals made a horrific squeaking noise after 3 weeks. Kona Jack--Worked OK. Didn't love them, didn't hate them. Feet slipped on occasion. Primo Meat Tenderizers--Worked well but heavy and didn't take a beating very well. I saved the best for last: Azonic A-Frames--The best pedal I have ever owned!! Holds up well to bashing around. Grip is excellent. Still grips when wet. Heads of pins are a "Y" shape that grip like mad. I have NEVER had a foot slip with these pedals in over 2 years of use. Not even one!! Do yourself a favor and get these pedals.

A new option coming soon from Crank Bros.
Could give you a nice combination of both worlds. I got to check these out recently, and me likey! (though I definitely have not used a lot of different pedals) ![]()

I think you guys will love this pedal.
The new crank bro's are easier to clip in and out of they are lighter than the old mallets . I also love the syncros Mental Mag or alloy pedals. That is my all around DH pedal. Light not the toughest but I never slip off my pedals. Quote:

I need to backup PacMan on this one. I have a set of FiveTen's and A-Frames. They almost feel like clipless. If I was going to hit TW or something with dirt jumps or urban I would put on the A-Frames. For regular XC or AM riding, I feel safe in my Time ATAC clipless.
One side note. I have big feet (13's) and the heel of my fiveten's rub my chainstay. My shimano SPD's are really narrow and don't. So if you are a tall guy keep that in mind. It would bug the hell out of me on a long ride. |

Many of the pedals you see are made in the same factory. My Azonic A frame pedals are almost the same pedal as my Syncros pedal only heavier.
I would love to show you the castings and how they are almost the same. The A frame pedal is a tough pedal but but not as sticky or light as the syncros. Hit me up for the loop Thursday and I can bring some platforms you can check out. Quote:
