My 8 year old daughter Ryan has decided that she is ready for the Over The Hump Race series this season, at least the kids races anyway, so I told her that if she wanted to do it she had to prove it by doing what ever ride I put in front of her. There were two rules, #1 she had to ride without any complaining #2 she had to ride all of the downhills with no walking. She did both with flying colors.

Here's the ride, it's not that tough for an adult but for an 8 year old it is brutal.

We started with the Cowardly Men of Dirt at Ridge Park and took off on Bommer, saw krunner44 and said hi at the trail head. We were dropped almost immediately, but that was ok because I had both kids with me. Jake really wanted to ride the trails that the cowardly men took. Unfortunately their course was too hard for Ryan. We took Bommer to Emerald Ridge and rode out to the top of Old Emerald Trail. Then we dropped Old Emerald Trail. This isn't a very hard downhill, unless you are 8 and afraid of going downhill. Jake ate the trail up, loving every second of it. Ryan did it more timidly but she did it pretty well all the way to the bottom. From here we climbed back up to Bommer and took a break. While we were taking a break ajsura flew by at warp speed, from what I tell AJ has two speeds-fast and really fast. When she went by Ryan told me "She's fast, I'm going to be that fast." All I could say was "Yep." As we continued on Bommer towards Ridge Park ajsura past us on her way back and said, "you go sister!" to Ryan. This was great and I have to thank AJ because Ryan was really starting to struggle, but after her encouragement(made at light speed) Ryan put on the after burners and rode really hard for about ten minutes. A little farther along we ran into Dirtvert and the guys we started with and their new addition of Greengiant on their second lap, I stopped, conversed, said bye and then caught up with the kids for the last hill.

It was a great ride, we got to meet some STR people that I have not meet before. Ryan got a chance to see some of the awesome women riders that are part of STR. Ryan is ready for her first race and her only goal is to beat the two boys in her class at school who also race at Over The Hump.

Had a couple of hours during noon time to burn. I'd spent the whole morning looking for work, could also use a break.

Loaded the bike and drove north. Realized that the sun was searing, want.... no....need shade. Headed for the canyon.

Took the opportunity to practice turning in rough terrain more. I'm getting used to the sensation of drifting the tires without actually washing out. Still holding back a bit. It takes just one mistake, and things can turn into a world of hurt real fast. Pushed the limit even more in the ST, less penalty. Did that, quite fun.

Gratuitous trail shot of my blue collar trail bike.

Then proceeded to the local japanese market for a veggie lunch. Cold soba (stock photo). Yum.

Bought some hondashi (fish stock) for dinner....read the ingredients....funny....frying fish :) The End.

After riding my Ibis Mojo for the past 3 years, I have slowly upgraded some of the parts. Those parts slowly found their way to my wife's Giant Rincon and pretty soon I found myself riding my wife's hardtail as much as my Mojo. Hardtails are fun! I finally pulled the trigger on a new 2011 Ragley Blue Pig and am planning to place all my old parts on it.

Problem is I am a bit confused with what headset to place on it. I've seen a few pics with Cane Creek headsets on them but I have no idea which Cane Creek or other headset to get.

I finished this a couple weeks ago, but yesterday was its first real dirt ride. This is the first bike I've built myself, so I'm surprised it has gone this long without falling apart.

As my son gets more into riding his bike, I wanted something I could hop on and cruise around the neighborhood. I love my Stumpjumper, but with the clipless pedals and such, it's not real conducive to that. Plus, I wanted to be able to carry stuff - like my son's baseball bag to the park, for example. I had looked into cargo bikes, but I didn't really need to carry THAT much. Plus I wanted something that could do trail duty as well. When I saw the Surly Ogre frame – Karate Monkey geometry with added usefulness via a plethora of braze-ons, holes and mounting points for racks, trailer and cages (between the frame and fork, there are mounts for three Salsa Anything Cages, plus two more bottle cages) – I knew it was the one I needed. It's one of few frames that can accommodate disc brakes, trailer, rack and fender at the same time. No, I have no intention of putting fenders on it.

I decided to build it as a single speed, sort of the anti-Stumpjumper if you will. Simple and light. Most of the parts are inexpensive – didn't see much point in going weight weenie on a steel frame. Two areas I went a little more upgrade than I intended were the brakes (Elixir 5s), thanks to the Path's Best Price and Cheap, and the wheels, which are Stan's Flows and will move right over to the Stumpy if I want.

One thing I hadn't done is swap out the rear quick release with a bolt axle – there's a recent thread about the Karate Monkey's horizontal dropouts, which the Ogre shares, and problems with quick releases staying put. I was going to do that before I hit dirt with it. But with my Stumpy out of commission with a rear derailleur cable one strand away from snapping, I decided to try it. It worked just fine, although I didn't do anything too heavy. There were some short steeps that required my full mashing ability, and it held. That may be thanks to the Tugnut tensioner.

So, how's it ride? Well, originally I thought this might just be a spare bike for when the full squish wasn't available. Now I can see many times riding this bike even when I have a choice. It's amazing how a familiar trail can become so new when going from 5 inches of travel and 20 gears to a rigid singlespeed. It's a whole new world. Simpler. And I can see this bike making me a stronger, better rider. I intended to go out for a short spin yesterday, maybe 10 miles. I ended up doing 15, grinning the whole time, and would have done more had I had the time. I still have a few things to learn about this singlespeed thing, but it's a blast.

The beauty of it is I can throw the rack and panniers on and it becomes a work vehicle. I'm a writer and photographer specializing in motorsports, and this bike has done a great job of hauling me and my cameras around a couple of different racetracks. I'd like to do some more bike shooting, too, so it can carry equipment into the woods as well.
So, thanks to Brandi and Cynthia at The Path for getting me the frame and helping me choose components. Thanks to Cory at OC Bicycle Service + Garage for the BB shell chasing, advice and the specialty tools. Their self-service workbenches are awesome.

Thank you Matt and crew at Over The Hump for adding a "Clydesdale Open" class for series:bang:.....

I know personally at a svelte 235 lbs I do grow weary of lining with fellow racers whose waist is about the same diameter as one of my thighs:lol: but that is racing. At least this way those of us in the "big-boned" and the "I actually eat real food" category can go suffer together!

While I don't think 6'4" and 205 is a clyde- I will be the first to call out them out!- if you want to win that bad, have at it. There will be a scale there so be prepared to weigh in sans footwear if you look like questionable#-o

Hope to see some fellow clydes lining up next Tuesday night!!
