Demo'ed a Chumba at the Aliso event a few weeks ago that had the new XT's. Loved the lever feel & modulation. They were noisier (squealing when dry) than my basic Hayes Nines though. Seems like I've heard of that as a gripe with previous Shimanos too, or is it just a break-in thing?

I've heard the same thing. Some people have told me the latest ones are better- but did not get a yes or no to whether or not they still squeal.

My Juicy 5's squeal a lot- but I got used to it and dont notice it anymore. And my next bike is going to have them as well, but maybe upgrade them to Avid Codes somewhere down the line...

My Juicy 7s work great on my DH bike, and I don't have any problems with being too grabby. After I passed the initial break-in (which was a race and a couple rides), they became silent.

But braking styles vary between riders, so there's a lot of personal preference when it comes to brakes.

Shimanos are good brakes.

I've had older 555's, the new LXs, Xts (few years old). 6 Shimano sets in all. Easy to setup, simple, mineral oil system. Work good, way less problems than my friends with Hayes.

I have tried Hopes minis, M4s. Worked on Hayes 9's. Avid Mechs too. Shimano still my favorite. There was some gripping here about some folks with the 2pot XTs. Never had those problems myself. I'll stick to Shimano because they always worked for me and are way easy to bleed.

PM dude. Looking for some old 4pot XTs.

Btw, the Path is good place to get some brakes. Check out the takeoff OEM wall of stuff. Usually some good deals to be had there.

I have hope M4s they are the best but for the money you cant beat the Juicy 5's or 7's I have both and the only real difference is the knob.
I might put the Hope Moto's on my DH bike. But I have not found anything wrong with the juicy 7's that are on it now.

I haven't had any noise issues with any of the 6 sets of Shimano brakes we have once broken in. I usually run one organic and one metallic pad in each caliper.

I have gotten some noise during break-in or if the pads get contaminated, but they quiet down once everything is bedded in.

Since this thread has gotten somewhat derailed, let me just add: The Path ROCKS!

Thanks for the info Marshall.

Adding to my reversal of opinion on The Path, I was in there again yesterday. Like my previous visit, the staff was really attentive, in an informative, non-pushy way. I talked about this with a friend who's had the same experience as me: Started out disliking them, but we've both had positive experiences lately. And since they carry nearly everything I drool over, I'll be back.

Adrenaline is still my first stop: Great stuff, cool peeps, a more convenient location to me, and phenomenal service. But if they don't carry something and Path does, I'm perfectly happy to pay them a visit.

What else needs to be said. The boys (and girl) at The Path rock. I am blown away with the crazy obscure freeride parts they dig out in a pinch when no one else can even find it in a catalog. and........No Iron horses in that stable ..Dino you big bad cowboy.

Just a quick thanks to the Path. (Wish you were closer) I've been wanting women's specific armor from rockgarden but couldn't get anything ordered anywhere unless I put % cash down first. Not a problem here AND they're even getting me different sizes to try. More women are getting into technical riding I wish more shops would carry them in stock. I apreciate your service/advice not to mention the great deal on my 7.7 and one of your guys selling me his personal bike which is my dream bike!
I love my LBSs but you can never have enough great bike shops.
Keep up the great work it's much apreciated.

did anyone see the decline issue where they did the trip up to mammoth?

the crash and burn section has someone from the path completely digging his elbow in the dirt, while still trying to rode out the turn...

that alone makes me want to go to the shop... meet someone famous.

We just saw that issue at the Southridge Awards. For some reason I totally can't remember his name right now!!

That was the same weekend we were up there, though!
