Default Bike shops in Maui

My wife and I are headed to Maui for our 35th anniversary in March. We are planning on at least a couple of days of mountain biking, so we will be renting bikes over there. We'd appreciate any recommendations for bike shops that rent bikes. What brand of bikes and the costs.

Also, I got to surf while we're there. Any recommendations on board rentals?

You may also want to pose this question in the mtbaaarrr hawaii forums. THere is a list of bike shops in the 2nd post.

Mountain Bike Magazine did an article in last months issue (I think last months ). The link is below. If it doesn't connect, then search Hawaii in the quick search at the top left of the page.
I think it said something in the area of $50 a day for rentals, but not sure.

Have fun. I'm Jealous of the trip. My Brother-n-Law lived there for two years, but he didn't get into MTBiking till after he moved back to the main land. Only if....

Thanks Hanzo, I've seen a couple of threads that mention Crater Cycles, and they are one of a couple of shops I am looking at.

Crater is right by the airport and the guy running the shop is super nice and friendly. Our rentals were Kona Kikapu's and it also includes a bike rack. I'd recommend renting on a Sat. cause the shop is closed Sun. That way you get two days for the price of one day.

Have fun out there and I think Poli Poli is open now. Do a search on YouTube. There's a video of the trails there and Happy Anniversary.

Thanks Northshore. Looks like another good recommendation. They might be a little cheaper for multiple days.

I'm planning on going in May. Here's what I found searching MTBR.

Heres a couple of options that I know of...

1. Rent from West Maui Cycles in Lahaina, the rental bikes are Cannondale Jeyklls I believe. 4" of xc travel. Good Condition. Not sure how much...808 661 9005 will give you the answer. Chris and Chewy both ride and are great to work with.
2. Call up paw at crater cycles and dial into a Kona king kikapu 4" travel xc.

i think he charges $60/day. the bikes I saw were pretty new. you cant miss one of his self advertised threads in the hawaii forum.. the number is in one of those.

hope this helps. plenty of rides island wide. let us know.

Cheers.

There are Six shops on Maui. South Maui Bicycles in Kihei, West Maui bicycles in
Lahaina and Island Biker in Kahului and Crater Cycles in Kahului.
Island Biker Is A Specialized dealer
Crater has Kona 808-893-2020
West Maui has Canondale
South Maui has Treks
Two shops in Haiku but I forget the names and I am not sure what they rent good shops
though.

Makawao Forest has some singletrack and a freeride area
Waikoa is a good ride.
Poli Poli is great but has been devastated by a fire.
West Maui has some good climbing right out of Lahaina the west Maui guys will tell you
where to ride.
Crater Cycles can take you down the Volcano They can rent you some nice downhill bikes. I have not done it but I plan to.

I am sure there are some good trails on the south side but I live on the
North Shore The South Maui guys can tell you where to ride.

There are a bunch of guys that do ride down the Volcano rides but they
are tours that take you to the top of Haleakala and you ride cruiser type
bikes all the way down to Paia on the road.

I hope this helps.

Doug

My recommendations is to shuttle to the top of Haleakala and ride down skyline trail, to Mamae trail and finish through Polipoli park, 18 miles downhill and a great ride. there is also Makawao forest which has new trails, check out www.mauimountainbiking.com for mor trails.

Thanks autoduel, that's just what I was looking for.

I guess I could have checked MTBR, but since I've been here at STR, I rarely go back.
